OK...so I'm dumb (FSAutostart1.45 ?)

I could use some help here.  I guess I just don;t "get it"  ::) ;).

I have heard how FSAutostart can shut down background programs and such.  For the life of me I can't figure out how to take all the various processes that show up when you hit XP's CTL/ALT/DEL and get them into FSAutostart to tell it to turn them off.

The help file at the website is no help... seems to be focused on running ADDITIONAL programs when you start FS2004.

The program listing on the screen is empty when the app is run.  There is an "Add" button..... but there are no guidelines about what/how to add if you don;t know the name of the program that is running and generating the process.

Any help here appreciated.

best,

......................john

JB-when you click the button (I believe it says "services"), there should be a list that pops up, each with a drop down menu to either stop, stop and restart, or "no action".  To the right of those is a recommendation for each one when you highlight it.

Then you just click "Configure" and point FSAutoStart at the fs9.exe file...

I wish I were home right now to show you w/ screenies...hopefully it helps!

Here we go, pics and all. I use FS AutoStart for all my games, not just FS9.

Start up FSAS and you get this screen:

[/img]

Now hit File and select New. Here is what you get:

[img]http://www.simviation.com/yabbuploads/fsas2.jpg
[/img]

Check blank and add FS9 as I did. You can add a descrip if you like. Then hit SAVE. Now you get this:

[img]http://www.simviation.com/yabbuploads/fsas3.jpg
[/img]

You can see that I added one, called FS9A since I already have my FS9 in there. Highlight your new FS9 and hit Configure. You will get this:

Image

Hit the Browse button and navigate to your FS9.exe file. Click it and it will be entered. All else is options.

I always let it defrag my memory. If you select Force Idle Tasks to Execute...........this can take a bit. I ONLY select defrag memory.

Now hit SAVE. Now select SERVICES and you will get this:

[img]http://www.simviation.com/yabbuploads/fsas4.jpg
[/img]

If you put your cursor over the right edge of this screen and drag it out a bit, a DESCRIP. window will pop up along side. Now go down the list highlighting each service. Read the descrip. For the most part, if they say leave it on, I leave it on. Rest is up to you. You can always come back and reset it.

Click on NO ACTION and you will get a drop down box with the options. Go through the whole list and when you are down, hit SAVE.

Now hit the PROGRAMS button and you get this:

[img]http://www.simviation.com/yabbuploads/fsas6.jpg
[/img]

Do the same thing as in services to the programs you select for FSAS to handle. When done, yes, hit SAVE.

Now, close down FSAS, yes close it down. If you try to run FS9 through here it won't work. When you shut FSAS down and restart it, it imports those settings you just saved. When it is restarted, just highlight your FS9 icon and hit START.

Hope this helped. Easy once you get the hang of it. Took me a bit too. Good luck and have fun.

Whats the point in running it? Honestly..... Just shut everything off manually, and you dont get much improvement for most part, I tried it and ended up with major windows failure dilema! Cheers, Gunny (Just my opinion on this)

Sry JB. I am at work so can't get to mine. Will check tom. afternoon. But yours and mine are totally different.

Let me do some checking around.

OK, after doing some checking I think I see the problem here.

You got FSAutoStartUp....................what you need is FSAutoStart from here:

http://www.kensalter.com/fsautostart/

What you got is a different program. The program you have allows you to add programs, like FSNavigator, Team Speak, any that you want to run with your FS. They will start up at whatever option you chose...........While FS loads up, after it loads or before it loads. This program is ONLY for FS9.

Ken's screen shots, although small, look just like what I posted.
So go download it and then run through the setup as in the pic. tute here in above post. You will be fine.
Any probs., let me know.

Enjoy JB.

I noticed a significant improvement.  As for the advantage of running it, that's simple.  You don't have to go in and turn it all off (then back on again) manually.  One click and boom.  All done. ;)

Exactomundo!!!   Hype             ;D

JB..................

IF you notice in FSAutoStart, there is the section in the box at the bottom of the Configuration page that will allow you to select any additional programs you want to launch with FS9.

Pretty much doing the same thing as FSAutoStartUp.......don't you think?

Here is something else I remembered. If you have a game that launches a config. utility (Set game parameters, graphics etc.) BEFORE it launches the actual game, then in FSAutoStart in the Configuration panel, you would want to first navigate to that config's .exe file. Once that is selected, then hit the "This is not the main app" tab below the Browse button. Then it will ask you to navigate to the games .exe file.

If you don't do this for those game that have a config. utility pop up first, then once you run the utility, the resources and programs you shut down will be started back up.........In essence, you actually did nothing for your game.

Again, good luck and enjoy. AND thankyou Ken Salter!!

z1010,

Start FSAutoStart and highlight your FS9, go to resources and find which one, two or three little resources you shut down that is terminating your connection.

Read the descriptions when you highlight one of the resources.

Might have to do a little trial and error, but you have one or more shutting down that is terminating your connection.

I have two set ups in FS9 right now, one for offline flight and one for online.

Every system is different so I can't tell you what to look for specifically, but check those resources that have to do with "telephony" or "network".

Good luck.

Great news John. I know you have had a time of it trying to get things ironed out. Am really glad that this little program has helped you out.

Like so many other things recommended here and there, they work for some and not for others. Or barely any difference or a BIG improvement. It all comes down to the fact that everyone's system is different.........don't care if you have the same this or the same that. They are still different.

I really think the people this program will have the greatest impact on are those with slower processors. Then too, some of those resources, and not just Microsoft's, but others that can be running that have been installed by the myriad of programs we all download, can and many times cause conflicts with our flight sims. Which everyone knows are one of the most intensive programs you can run on your machine.

Anyhow, it is great news. Ken Salter did a fantastic job with this little jewel. I now use it for all my games.

Take care and enjoy your new found performance!  ;D

I am new here.  I am no techy and my PC skills are somewhat limited.

I have a couple of "process termination" programs, but had to find what the processes were first in order to find out if they were needed...found at: http://www.liutilities.com/products/win ... sslibrary/   (was very helpfull to someone like me)

Once I learned what the processes were and what I could kill, I decided to just do it manually, rather than install and learn a new program.  I kill virtually everything in the tray, then go to my processes and end all that I can (takes 20 seconds tops).  I have heard that there are more "hidden" processes possibly running.  I (after a year and a half) have Fs9 running very well and hate adding new programs for fear of mucking up what has taken me quite awhile to achieve.  My PC (when everything possible is killed) is using about 175mb out of 1gig of ram.  I am curious of other's minimum ram usage.  I'm guessing at this somewhat low level of ram usage, I need not worry about killing any other processes......or am I mistaken....again?

thanks
