I've got a Soltek Nforce2 mainboard, an XP2600+ clocked at 2.2ghz, 1024mb of Dual Channel PC2700 ram running nice on a 170mz fsb (340mhz @ DDR). The whole thing benchmarks just over all similar setups I've seen posted. (slight o/c)

Intel are tempting me away with the memory bandwith specs which doubles on Intel i865PE or i875 chipset mainboards. These boards support an 800mhz FSB with apparent easy overclock options on air cooling.

Is it reasonable for me to believe that I should get a budget based system using an overclocked 2.4gig P4 on an i865PE or i875 chipset mainboard running 1024mb of dual channel DDR400?

I had a look at the P4 2.4gig cpu benchmark next to my AMD XP2600+ and it looks positively sick. Is overclocking the new system to a 1ghz FSB going to give me my CPU power back? I know I'll get a massive memory bandwidth increase, so, is 512mb of top grade ram advised or do I need the full 1024mb to make it all work?

Buying a P4 3ghz CPU is not an option if this is to be a budget system.

Or isn't there any practical advantage?

I don't want to start a fued between AMD and Intel supporters, I just need to know if the above is practical in real computing. It looks ok on paper.  

Is anyone doing this?  :o

My 3DMark score was down a bit from my AMD system whether the pentium was overclocked or not.

NO P4 is way better!!!

Your running that Athlon pretty quick at 2.2gig for an XP 2600.

How are your temps etc, hope you have heaps of fans.
I never like to push a cpu at much more than about 13.5 to 14x multiplier. You are running yours around 16x.

As for your question about Amd vs P4 - i think it really comes down to personal choice and $$$$.

I have two identical systems here - One running an XP3000 with the Barton core and one running a P4 2.0gig.

Both are on a Gigabyte N-Force2 ultra 400 Dual DDR mobo, 1024gig pc2700 DDR and GeForce4 Ti4600.

The P4 system returns a 3D Mark of just over 10,000 while my AMD system scores around 15,000.

I get better frame rates on my amd system than on the P4. It also cost a hell of a lot less.

Have a look at some comparisons between the AMD 3000, AMD 3200 and the Mid range p4's (2.66Ghz). I think you will find that for your money the AMD is better value. Some people swear by Pentium and some swear by AMD.

I believe it comes down to personal choice, and have never seen any evidence that one is more reliable than the other.

Both have their faults and both have there good points.

Just wait until I get my motherboard back and some Geil Golden Dragon RAM. I'll have my Barton 2500+ screaming at 2.3 ghz.

When you compare the Barton and the TBred, the Bartons larger cache makes it a little more tempting. Considering that you can bump the core clock from 1.8 ghz to 2.2 ghz pretty easily on most setups, you'd almost definatly be getting more from the Barton for less money. But, the TBreds can OC too, although I haven't seen anyone with a great OC on one yet. =\

i am on the verge of upgrading from my tbrd 1.4 to a barton 3200 and i hope its a lot quicker than i have... you right about the overlocking on tb its not tremendous i tried it and didnt even get 100 mhz out of it without it being unstable.....

I think we should just say Athlon XP 2800+ is the same as the P4 2.8
That way no one flames, and it is also very true anyway.  I use P4 and Athlon xp systems and find the equilavent processor gets the same scores.

Well, I put the multiplier up to 13 from 12.5 on a 166mhz FSB.....

I considered the AMD's, having now experienced a machine with Dual Channel DDR & 800fsb, not to mention some greenish looks from an AMD XP2800 owning friend, I'm bloody glad I did'nt get one!  :P

The fx systems eat P4s for breakfast now.  Imagine a dual fx51.
