ti4200 limits

Postby Daz » Wed Nov 12, 2003 8:18 am

hey all i have a XFX geforce 4 ti4200 128mb turbo video card. i have overclocked it somewhat crazy heres the specs

STOCK
core clock 300mhz
Memory Clock 620 mhz

MY CARD after oc
core clock 390mhz
Memory Clock 710 mhz

i have two heat extraction fans directly underneath the card and a chassis fan blowing over the top of it.. the card has a decent enough heatsink and fan and also has a heatsink on the bottom aswell.

all the way through overclocking i have got stable speeds and it still hasnt reached its limit yet and i am getting fantastic performance in fs9....

just wondering if theres a limit to the ram or core apart from the temp.....i mean if my system was cool enough could i oc the ram to say like 800 mhz? my system runs coolish at 36'c internal temp but i fear i may damage the card if i oc any more....even if it was cool enough

know what i mean? any comments would be nice

Basically, you have good cooling hence your very good overclocking results.
Despite this, I'm very doubtful your RAM will handle 800mhz - If you prove me wrong, good for you!!! :)

Alas, you'll find the limit once the card fries so be careful!

Fitting some heat sinks directly onto the RAM chips (cut down northbridge coolers are good for this) will certainly help.

My rule of thumb with O/Clocks is if the machine will run 3D Mark 2001 10 times in a loop without lock ups then I regard the 'clock sucessful.

An example, a friend of mine has recently fried his FX5800!  the machine was very stable with the overclock applied, like you Daz, he got great performance from FS9 even CFS3 !!!  :o

He recently bought "Halo" alas, the card could'nt handle this game whilst overclocked first the screen started to "speckle" then no output from the card.....

Perplexed, he bought his now plasticy burning type smelling pc round to my house and I took a look.

You can see what looks like the beginning of the PCB melting under the graphics chip!!!!  :o  :'(

Considering his ,now piece of scrap, cost him about

well i think i only run fs to its limits every other game i reduce to 1024 x 768 x 16 and that gives good results but fs demmands more to look nice i have it set at the highest resolution possible at 32 bit textures... i have finaly reached a limit of 410/740 and im not gonna go any higher... the air pumping out the back of the computer is still fairly cool so im not gonna risk it now i get 15 + fps under any cirucmstances on full settings all sliders maxed which is pretty smooth im satisfied... thats not gonna stop me upgrading after xmas to the beastly geforce fx5960 ultra with 500/1.05ghz overclocking capabilities.. water cooling aswell and have a try at overclocking the ram and cpu....should have a good system after all this... im gonna keep this card for my second machine im building with the same spec ish for LAN with my friend who has a piece of crap and will not run fs... p100 8mb ram 800mb hd etc u get my picture...my dad will use this computer aswell for his work and he is paying half for it :D

when i bought my new pc - spec below i made the stupid choice of going for this card rather than the fx5600 which is better at handling AA and filtering etc.. my fps takes a nose dive when enabling this but the overclocking potential on this card is phenominal... its built on the TI4600 8 layer PCB board and has the same memory chips as the ti4600.... plus it only cost 89 pounds :D anyone looking for avlue for money get his card and 4 fans to cool the beast down after you overclock it (not recomended unless u know what your doing). value wasnt the issue when buying my new system although i didnt go for the full on super computer i just wanted a fast reliable one... thinking back i could have had the FX5900 but they were out of stock and i wanted so badly to play fs on my new machine so i got that card instead.....until the time the card gives up on a game and goes below 10fps i wont upgrade.. which wont be long considering technology these days :)

ah a nice final series Ti4200.
You can nearly go to Ti4600 specs with these

yeah as i suspected woulnt go further than what i had it at despite the cool temps... got wierd pink dots when playing fs9 and fl challenge but im about to upgrade anyways to the FX5700 ultra... the specs on that thing look impressive and it has 900 mhz ram clock anyways lol. the core is at something like 475 so should be enough to handle full settings on fs9... incidently has anyone tried to overclock the 5700?. i know the 5950 can be overcloked somewhat radical with the ram going right up to 1.05 ghz :O but wanted to know if i could increase the performance of the 5700 when i get it ?

if it lives up to expectations i wont have to but has anyone got one of these and how well does it perform?

thanx , daz

Nice choice of card Daz, the true sucessor (as in o/clockable!) to the ti4200

I've seen these baby's beating the FX5800!  8) - go to town on your cooling, and I'm sure you'll be delighted with the results!

My advice, O/clock it as soon as you get it home, if you  blow it up, simply take it back to the shop claiming it did'nt work in the first place! - This tactic worked for me when I popped my Celeron last year... 2.8ghz boom! and the shop just swapped it for a new un!  ;D

Paul.
