should i overclock

I'm new here, but have had MSFS for a few years and have been on a few MSFS forums.  I have heard nothing but "WARNING!" when it comes to overclocking.   For every guy out there that says he has no problems, there seems to be two or three that have cooked their CPUs.

Avsim has a nice tweak (maybe here too....?) to take advantage of Pentium's HT technology.....I would suggest that tweak before putting your CPU at risk by overclocking.......unless you have disposable funds.

Those 2 or 3 people are idoits who are probably just looking at the voltage indicator and saying hmm lets bring that to the  highest level.

If you know what your doing, then overclocking is very safe. Plus, CPU's now have thermal protection and will underclock themselves automatically to prevent overheating. In some instances this saftey may not work, but I've been overclocking for years and never cooked a CPU...unintentionally.

I almost included the fact that some that fried their CPUs probably did so out of their own ignorance.   I was hoping the OP would either recognize this, due to his knowledge or not recognize this due to lack of said knowledge.   There are many "levels" here and when someone (with lots of experience) sais "it's easy", it might lead someone with less experience to believe that it is easy for them as well.

I guess I'm curious (forgive my ignorance of grasping the "big picture" when it comes to PCs and PC companies) as why companies don't OC their own product.  Overclock it, add whatever (cooling/safety features) and label it "faster".  You know....."it's a 3.6 system but runs as fast as a 4.0 system and is completely safe."

I'm guessing it's like running a 6 cylinder engine (meant for 85mph) at 120mph....it will eventually catch up with it's life expectancy.  That and the fact that someone who OCs there CPU anyway probably wouldn't be caught dead with a 2 year old CPU almost answers my own question..........?  I've got to stop drinking when I'm thinking of things I barely comprehend....oh well, cheers!

I can tell some fabulous stories of what happens when CPU's get too hot...

Actually, companies do do that to give their products an edge. Examples include alienware, dell, etc. Even some OEM parts come overclocked a bit. Abit mobo have their FSB slightly raised to give their mobo an advantage in benchmarks. XFX and leadtek overclock their video cards a bit too, again, for benchmark competitiveness.
