AVG does a good job, I've also used Kaspersky and view it as good. Norton or McAfee will hog resources.

Do not go with Norton. Please! I have gone through AVG and most of the afore mentioned. The most unobtrusive and user friendly anti malware, anti virus, and registry protection I have ever found is Vipre. No system slowdowns and unnecessary warnings. There is an anual fee but you didn't ask about freeware. Trust me on this one...

I had to google Norton removal tool to get rid of that piece of ****. Even at that, bits of it still haunt me.

AVG although free, isnt what the OP was asking, he was asking "What is the best"

From my experience with; "Free trial" of Payware anti-virus software, has left me with hard drive headache after not wanting it, and unsuccessfully trying to remove it...

Norton and NOD 32... >:(...!

Personally, I think I'll stick to AVG, at least that's easy to un-install, if its not wanted.

Free "Anti-spyware/Malware" seems to get rid of most of my daily little annoyances!... 8-)...!

I agree 100%.

A very long time ago I used to download "trial" versions of software. I think that the problem is that the manufacturers make THEIR software perform better by optimizing your system for THIER software, no matter how bad it makes your system perform with other software.

On top of that, Windows uninstaller always leaves trash behind. I now use Revo Uninstaller to remove software, and CCleaner to make sure it's gone.

I used Norton back in the '90s. Sometime after it changed hands it became less effective and slowed the system down.

I next tried McAfee. I liked that until I got a virus that turned it off. McAfee then added a password requirement if you wanted to turn it off. But by then I'd moved on.

I use to swear by AVG and used it for almost 10 years. And then I started getting viruses.

For the past 3-4 years I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, which suits me just fine. And I
