I am using JZip. I cannot open any downloaded files from simviation as it tells me JZip does not recognize the format. I've never had this problem before. Is there anything anyone can suggest?

whats the problem with xp/win 7 and i'm guessing vista own method of extracting the files. Both Xp and win 7 work fine for me.

I downloaded and installed IZarc. I am using Vista. I then downloaded 3 airplanes from Simviation, no problem. I tried moving the files into the aircraft directory for FSX, but got nothing. Aircraft did not appear and when I checked the folders, they were all empty. I tried extracting the files directly into the FSX/Simobjects/Aircraft directory and was told I do not have permission to write to that directory. I'm stuck...never had a problem downloading new aircraft before...

As I have never seen vista let alone use it, I'm guessing your not logged in as an admin user?

Personally I don't extract from the zip file directly into the aircraft folder but to a folder adjacent to the zip folder which is normal on xp and win 7.

such as C:\myfiles\zip\plane.zip
gives me
myfiles\zip\plane\contents of the plane.zip file
I then copy from the plane folder to the aircraft and effects etc.

Check your UAC settings.

I am the only user of this PC and yes I am logged on as Admin. I've never had to manually extract in to other files when downloading from other sites. I usually copy the new file straight into the FSX directory.

I usually just use the default unzipper that comes with windows unless its an RAR file. When I open a zip I save it to a folder expressly for the purpose to check the file size before installing it. Try this if

The files posted at Simviation are no different from those posted on the other major flight sim websites.

There is unfortunately no standard template for configuring addons. They will all vary to some extent depending on the preferences of whoever uploaded them.

I tried extracting the files directly into the FSX/Simobjects/Aircraft directory and was told I do not have permission to write to that directory.

Not the best idea. Try the right-click 'Extract to Folder' option. This will automatically extract the files to a new folder in the same directory as the zip file. You can then check the files before pasting them into the FSX directory.

Hagar is spot on!  I have Vista and simply right-click, extract all, defaults to same location as the zip, check the titled a/c file to make sure it's allright, then simply copy&paste the a/c folder into ...simobjects/airplanes.

And I'm a near total noob! :D  If I can do it, anyone can! :)
