Windows 7 frustration...!

After enjoying my lovely copy of Windows XP Pro for many, many years, I am suddenly finding that I am no longer able to upgrade my version from "original" to SP1/2/3 after a re-install on my completely re-formatted Hard Drive, which means I can no longer install many of my newer programs which insist on SP2/3 being installed first!

Uncle Bills refusal to support the popular Win XP, (my copy is no longer recognised!), means that I am now forced to look at Windows 7....

...and thats where my misery starts!... >:(...

Thanks for the reminder Paul. I just installed SP3. It's a big update so I'm not sure what it's all about.

I am suddenly finding that I am no longer able to upgrade my version from "original" to SP1/2/3

Did you try this route? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

Hello Doug...

Its a lot to do with the M$ dreaded; "Product Keys".

My OEM version of Win XP Pro is so old that M$ no longer recognise the key when installing my copy on a new formatted Hard Drive, and trying to install any Service Pack, etc, upgrades; (SP 1, SP2 or SP3)!
Everything ran fine, until I uninstalled my original Win XP (with its previous SP2 installed), and installed it again (successfully) on my blank HDD, and then tried to re-install the latest Service Packs.....
Product Key confusion!...as Bill waves his finger side-to side... as he does!... >:(...!

I was perfectly happy with my Win Xp Pro, until I was having hardware probs, and had to Format my HDD and start all over again!
A lot of my programs were not compatible, without SP2 being present!

At the moment my Win XP Pro cannot be upgraded to run my old and new software...
..and my new,

Mr Fozzer, you could have paid me half that to make you miserable. Instead you chose to line Mr gates already black hole deep pockets.  :( :P :D

Fozzer, try ringing the M$ helpline for activation. As it is a legit copy they're obliged to do something, tis the law of the Isles. Failing that contact Trading Standards as they can take action on your behalf as XP is still a supported product ;)

..well Chums....

...its now 8:30 at night, and I'm into my third 18-hour day, trying to get this bl**dy thing set-up... >:(...!
Win 7 is an "upgrade only" kit for the likes of we home-builders, so I had to re-install my copy of Win XP Pro + all my Win XP drivers, and then boot up from the Win 7 DVD replacing my Win XP....which after a lot of head-scratching, (and multiple cans of Carlsberg), it finally did!
Its bl**dy awful!... >:(...!

I searched, in vain, for an option to display it in my usual "Classic Mode"...no such luck... >:(...!
Its far too complicated for my simple brain, compared to Win '98 and Win XP....too many fancy colours,

I feel your pain Paul. The day is coming for all us XP slaves.
I bought my girl friend a refurbished 80 gig desktop unit two weeks ago for her birthday To my suprise It came with an XP disc that said "For refurbished PCs only. Not for use in New PCs". Hers is a refurbished HP Compaq with older hardware. First time I've seen an XP disc like this.
Also if MS won't support your key anymore, They are kind enough to let you purchace a new key for your exsisting discs.. Best of luck! I think I would make the call to Billies empire first, as Ozzie said.

...another problem...

Because I spend a lot of time in Flight Sim Multiplayer sessions, I always use a simple ADSL USB Wired Modem to to connect to the Internet, to avoid "Port" problems associated with "Routers"....
...'trubble is, simple, low cost ADSL Modems are now considered "Old", and are no longer supported by the latest Operating Systems; (Win 7)... >:(....
...forcing me to consider obtaining a Mode + Router instead, with Win 7 Drivers!
(Most simple ADSL wired Modems are only supported by Win '98, ME, and XP).

So it looks like I'm going to have the usual Router Port Problems during Multiplayer Sessions...much to the annoyance of my fellow Pilots!
(...been there before!)

Paul...ready to die... :-/...!

Don't give up Paul! There is something you must be missing. Just four days ago, I reinstalled Windows 2000 on my neighbor's Dell, and it upgraded on Windows update from SP1 to SP4 without a problem. Ms not supporting XP only means they aren't going to develop new or addition updates or upgrades, but you should still be able to get older previous updates for a good long time to come.

When you reinstalled XP, did you delete any partitions and format the drive, or just try to recover the existing, current install? If the later, that may be your problem. If you had SP3 installed, and you then tried to recover backward to a lesser version, it might be possible that some of those newer registry entries might be preventing the install from taking the older key.

I know it's a major pain in the backside, but I'd start again.

GB1 never gonna use Win7!!! LONG LIVE XP!!!!! ;)

As for your modem issues, as long as the internet service is active, you usually don't even need any modem software install. (Not sure how it works on you side of the pond, but I've been using external adsl and cable modems for many years and have NEVER needed any extra drivers or software.) I'm guessing this is because Win7 didn't have your hardware in mind when it was "born".

Hello Ground... ;)..!

My problem was, I installed my SP 2 Drivers in my Win XP Pro a long time ago (upgrade), and everything worked fine...
..then I had a hardware problem the other day, and had to Format the HDD and re-install Win XP pro again, but after so many years passing the SP2 upgrade was balked by the dreaded M$ WinXP/SP2/3 Product Key conflicts....
...don't ask...
Paranoid Bill... ;)...!

I just wish it was possible to pop into my local Computer shop and buy a new copy of Win XP Pro SP3....
...then my life would be complete... [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]...!.

Paul....bl**dy Modem/Router installation now for Win 7... >:(...!
..I don't need all this Win 7 grief!... :(... ;)... ;D...!

P.S....Ground...My Zoom 5510B ADSL USB Wired Modem came with drivers for Win '98, ME, and XP...but not for Win 7...(that hadn't been invented then)... :o...!

I'm sorry to hear of your issues, Paul, and I'm afraid that any advice I had has been already attended to. Just wanted to say that I was surprised to learn that you are now using a newer operating system than I am. (Still with XP 32bit.)  :D ;)

Good luck achieving full operational capability!  :)

Ongoing......Day 4+....

Searched all the suppliers of wired ADSL Modems and Modem/Routers, for Win 7 compatibility....
..nothing...
All the Drivers are for Win '98SE, 2000, ME, XP....(and a few for Vista if you are lucky/unlucky).

So, at the moment, I still cant get access to the Internet

a lot of internet providers will now supply you with a free modem, threaten to leave to them and see what happens. If you have no luck, virgin media offer a free modem with their internet, and I have never had a problem with online games, dropped connections, and the speeds and prices are great.
