Widows XP and Windows 7 same PC

Postby sammach » Sun Apr 11, 2010 4:53 am

I have Widows XP and Windows 7 operating on seperate hard drives on my PC the spec is as follows.
Processor Intel Duo CPU E6750@ 2.66 GHZ
Memory 3200 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5700 Graphics Card
Memory 1024.0
Each disc size 465GB
My intention was to get the best of both worlds as I wanted Windows 7 but wanted XP for some older software runs much better .
I am finding FS9 and FSX is fine on the Windows 7 but both sims crash on

I have 2 Hard Drives.
One with Windows XP Pro for my recent games, etc, which were written for Win XP.
The other drive has Windows '98 SE for all my really old Games, Hardware, etc, which were written for Win '98 SE.

I select the necessary Drive in BIOS during the DOS Boot-up sequence.

My Default is Win XP Pro.

(Press "Delete" during Boot-up).

They run OK independently.

The complete Operating system is held in each HDD Drive Registry.

Paul...G-BPLF...FS 2004...FS Nav.... (and Win XP Pro).
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.

Thanks, Fozzer for your prompt reply and for giving moral support, I have only just had this PC configured in this way, I was wondering if I had done the right thing, both operating systems are working well its just that the Flt Sims do not seem to like the XP Home installation, I start up as you Fozzer describe and both Operating systems run according to my selection, if I go into My Computer i can see both drives on each OP system, they are listed C for the XP and D for Windows 7, Down Loading the Graphics driver for Radeon HD 5770 is done seperately for each system, I think I am doing everything correct if anyone can see a problem from what describe I would appreciate any comment.

Maybe the registry does not have the info on the XP? Only installing them into BOTH OS' will do this. Might take up abit of space though :/

That's what I have to do...
Each Drive is treated separately, with its own Operating System installed and its own Registry, and each program has to be fully installed in that particular drive for it to work.

Almost the equivalent of having two computers!... :)...!

Thanks Mazza and thanks again Paul, I have FS9 installed on both drives, but I will have another go, I will remove every thing on both drives and start again, I wont run any thing until I have FS9 and FSX on both drives.
I will update as soon as I have finished maybe Wednesday or Thursday.

I have good news I can now fly my Sim in XP all day, just by chance yesterday I put a DVD film in the CDROM drive the film started and just like my FLT Sim ended abruptly and crashed XP again.
I then decided to load a tool to find any drivers that needed either replacing or updating, these so called free tools will give you a list of drivers that need updating, however you have to pay for the software to install them, I am cautious about these programs on the web as I had a bad experience with a REG Cleaner about a year ago. however this time the cost was worth it, as now all is well.
I am very grateful to all who tried to assist me, I  am now a little wiser, but will never be as clued up as some on this forum
