Direct X 10 for XP!!!!!

I found this on the web. It works. I have installed it and makes FSX SP2 look GREAT. Here is how you do it:
First, go to start, all programs, accesories, system tools, system restore. Set up a system restore point and call it "Before Direct X 10"(this is just a safety measure, just incase it installs wrong, but it should not).
Now, ensure that your video card is a Direct X 10 enabled card. Once you have checked that, download this: http://rapidshare.com/files/163675688/DirectX10_RC2_Fix_3-Pre-Final.zip
Once there, follow the prompts to install Direct X 10 for XP! No restarting required. Just fire up FSX SP2 and notice the difference(also makes Halo 2 for PC and ShadowRun for PC work on XP, normally Vista exclusives). Of course, if you have Vista, don't bother with this. But, if you are like me, and HATE Vista, this is the way to go!!!!!  ;D

I strongly suggest this to anyone, even if you don't sim much. I have played other games as well, and it works great!

Even though my rig is DX10 capable. I won't even bother with DX10 FSX.

99% of add-ons don't work with DX10, FSX was build on a DX9 platform anyway.

So, I too think, stay clear....

Actually, all of my add-on planes(and I have a few ;) ) have worked just fine since installing it. And yes, I have some payware planes as well. I have the Abacus Carrier Strike Force and Captain Sims C-130. They all have worked(also, all freeware scenery works as well). So as far as it not working, I don't know what you are talking about. ;)

Beware of "snake oil..."

It has been stated over and over by MS developers that this so-called virtual DX10 implementation simply can not work.

Even the original developers threw in the towel and admitted that they'd utterly failed to achieve their original objective...

So what do you know about this thing anyway?  How does it work? Why does it work?

I'd be very timid in doing things to my computer of this magnitude without it being official.  If this hack decides to shut down and never work again in a day or two, who are you going to get help from? The guy who hacked it? doubt it. Microsoft? Hell no, they didn't do it.

Rapid share can be used by any fred ted or joe, you don't really know what your getting. For all you know the guy got this DX10 mock and loaded the installer with a ton of spyware.  Doing something this is like a game of Russian roulette.

Maybe FSX works for you, but what has this DX10 whatever thing done to the rest of your computer?

Do it if you want but I would highly suggest you stop posting about it saying "its so perfect and everything works just like it should" when even the original developers of DX10 couldn't get it all to work.

Hi all

I read this isn't really DX10. I have tried to find the site where I read that. I don't remember where I read it though. It was a tech site though, not a gaming site.
I do remember people were saying that XP can not and never will be able to support DX10. It just doesn't work the same way and this hack isn't real DX10.

Like some have already said, it would be wise to stay clear of this.
If you really want DX10, the only way is Vista or wait for the next version of Windows.

I guess one could put a Porsche steering wheel on a VW, but it will not become a real Porsche :-/

Sorry. Did not mean to piss people off :-[. I was just saying, this works for me. All programs work on my computer still. Also, I am not a "noob" when it comes to computers. If something goes wrong, I am perfectly capable of fixing it. I work for Stanley(contractor for the Marines), so it is my job to know about computers. Anyhow, sorry I pissed people off :-[

I don't think you pissed anyone off there, osprey, it's just that some people, like me, tend to just download anything on here as if it is tried and tested by all. They are just warning anyone, that, as you stated, that this fix works for you, but may not work for anyone else. Keep up the good work for Stanley.

Hi again

I don't think you pissed anyone off, certainly not me. We were just wanting to point out that this hack IS NOT real DX10. While it may be working (by working I mean your pc still runs and functions), it isn't really working like true DX10.
I think it more likely fools some DX10 games (maybe all) into believing you really have DX10, but many DX10 features can't work, even if the game thinks they are there and fully functioning.

Here is one of the sites I read about this at. However, I still haven't found the thread that went into detail about how DX10 can't work on XP.

The technical reasons why this so-called "DX10 for WinXP" can never work is:

1. Base support for DX10 is a significant part of Vista's core engine. Without that same base support somehow being added into WinXP, DX10 simply can not work.

2. DX10 shader calls are executed by the DX10 capable GPU on the video card.

3. The "Alky Project" was an attempt to mimic the shader code that's a native part of Vista through software emulation on the CPU, basically adding yet more overhead processing to an already too busy system.

After many months of effort, the members of the "Alky Project" team determined that their software emulation wasn't going anywhere, and that the overall performance hit was simply too bad.   ::)
