The 64bit question

When I bought Xp pro, it came with both the 32 & 64 bit discs, can I install the 64bit version on a different computer and register it separately,  or do both discs share the registry info allowing only one or the other to be used?

you must install one or the other

a 64bit OS can not upgrade a 32bit OS and must be installed clean

make sure this disk has XP x64 SP2 incorporated into it. The HAL does not upgrade properly in the stand alone SP2 patch, just like it did not upgrade properly with the XP x32 stand alone SP2 patch. SP2 should be part of the clean Windows install in any XP system

Thanks for the reply and the info Nick,

It is the SP2 disc.

One last question, since I have already installed and registered the 32 bit version, when I reinstall, can I still use the 64bit version disc, or will I need to purchase another copy to switch over to 64?

Had I been a member of these forums when I built my system, I would have just gone the 64bit route to start with. ;D ;)

Thanks again for your time and help! :)

if your package came with both 32 and 64bit disks, i'd think it's safe to assume that you can install the 64bit version and use your old license, since, after all, you did purchase the disk

Cheers
