Restoring IE7 & desktop search

Postby ShaneG_old » Tue Dec 30, 2008 12:46 pm

I recently had a Trojan virus sneak through my system in an .exe file and completely disabled my IE7 and desktop search functions.

After using the web browser feature in Google earth to download and install Firefox,
I have learned about the virus and what it did to my system.

But since my file search system is also disabled, I haven't been able to locate all of the files that it placed in my system so that I can just delete them manually.

This is the first time something has slipped by both AVG and Spybot.

I always scan downloads with both before and after the download process, so I thought this one was safe also,

Well, I can't say with any certainty whether or not it will work, but here's what I would do. PROCEDE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

First, go here and download (don't install it yet, just download it) Avira. Then, go to Microsoft and download the IE7 setup program. Save them both to a handy place. (Like your desktop)

Second, UNINSTALL AVG. (This is only to prevent complications in further steps.) Reboot your machine.

Third, install and update Avira that you downloaded. This program is great, and it will uninstall cleanly if you decide to return to AVG later. The important thing to remember is to have ONLY ONE anti-virus solution installed on your system at one time!

Fourth, boot your machine in safe mode, and start Avira and run a scan. It may take anywhere from half and hour to several hours to complete, but let it finish. Safe mode is important, because if the virus goes active on normal start-up, Avira might detect the problem, but may tell you
