What is it and what does it do????

A shortcut to the original Microsoft operating system...>>>

You have to be REALLY OLD to remember the original MS DOS system which was (and still is) provided on a Floppy Disk...

...I can still remember it, like it was yesterday...and still use it, even now, for carrying out certain instructions!.. ...!

P.S....yet another good reason for having a Floppy Drive on your Computer!.......!

I remember talking about it a lot when I was learning how to use Windows 95 and when I knew people who were still programing DOS in a class.

Cor blimey! I remember my dad buying my neighbours Tatung Einstien in about 1985, and after the ViC 20, this was somthing else. It had several 'languages' on various discs (yes it had disc drives, none of this tape recorder nonsense!), and although at the time it meant nothing to me whatsoever, and still doesnt, one was called 'Dr. Logo' and there used to be a turtle that wanderd around the screen.....i think anyway.

There was several huge ring bound manuals that came with the Einstien and one was dedicated to the mysterious 'Dr. Logo' language and i poured over it inbetween typing naughty school boy storys about a teacher whos legs i liked and building tamiya model kits.

Still cant recall anything about it or if i indeed ever understood it!!!

Good-old Sinclair BASIC ruled the roost in those days...(1980+)... ...!

....together with the Zilog Z80 Micro-Processor...

...Bedroom Programmers joy!..."Fozzersoft International"...[smiley=thumbsup.gif]...!

Ok, you got me on that one. So how hard was it back then? I bet once you upgraded to a Ready Reckoner, you must have felt like you where really in the fast lane

Between then and the discovery of the Ready Reckoner came the Compabacus.....>>>



This involved me, on the left, programming the Compabacus in Runic, with the display on the right showing large Pixels appearing on a monitor screen, with my Mate, on the right, observing the answer to the mathematical problem by noting the arrangement of Pixels.

Compabacus reset was achieved by my Mate moving the Monitor into an upright position, whereby the all the pixels dropped to the bottom of the Monitor ready for the next program to be entered.

This Computer arrangement remained in place until the invention of the Sinclair Spectrum 48K, and the Commodore C64 in 1980*.... ...!

(I use "English Language" for programming now)... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...!

I work in software support, and even now, there is about 1 or 2 times a week that I will call for the command prompt and whip out a few DOS commands.

It seems less and less every year, and I love hearing the comments on the other end of the phone when I do it. Older IT guys generally give a favorable response, while younger users sit in awe and shock.

There are many times when you require/its necessary to carry out an instruction to cure a fault, carry out a particular operation, etc, from the Boot-up screen, (without the "Windows" Operating System getting in the way!... ...),  and a Boot-up in DOS is the way to go!......!

It uses the basic Disc Operating System for the computer.

It is always worth keeping a list of all the workable DOS Instructions ready for use in times of distress... ....!

QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System), i believe this was even before DOS 3 wich we use now, you also had one specificly for the IBM systems, leading manufacturer wich basicly handed Microsoft its monopoly on a plate.
