Networking Vista and XP

Ok, here it is, I have a Vista laptop and an XP desktop. The desktop is connected to my router via a cable, the laptop via wifi. Each functions perfectly accessing the internet email etc. I am trying though to network them. Here is what I have got so far:

Vista and XP have all privileges set to being able to access each other and set to be able to modify files from each other i.e hard drives have open access.
XP can see Vista, but Vista will not allow access, only to "public files"
Vista cannot see XP.
I have Mc Afee online and in the network setting, Mc Afee shows that the network is active and not restricted.
Windows firewall on both computers is disabled.

I have spent a lot of time, surfing the problem, but so far have no joy. I am sure that it comes down to a hidden switch in some menu some where in the depths of Vista, but I cannot find it. Has anyone got any ideas or has anyone managed to network Vista and XP?

Thanks
Matt

Are you sure you've got the router correctly configured to allow communication?

Can you elaborate please Mark. As it stands, I can surf on both computers, at the same time too. More than that I am a little in the dark. What would/should I be looking for.

it can also depend on which workgroup both computers are set up as, whether its something like mshome on the xp one and the vista one could be something like vistablah.

All you have to do is change both of them to the same network and i think in vista you have to allow the vista computer to be seen by the other computers in the network (not got vista installed at the moment so can't definitely say that'll work).

if they are both on the same network though, on the xp computer try my network places and view workgroup computers.

Sorry, i should have included that in my first post, they are both using the same network name and work group.

If it is a Dlink router they have a pretty good FAQ on their site.

Right click on the folder you want to share and click "share". make sure you add "Everyone" to the permissions. XP should be able to get into that folder now.
