Several Games won't run on Vista

FS2004 and Empire Earth 2 are the main two problems for me. FS2004 in particular had the curious and annoying effect of recognising itself as FSX - i.e. I'd put the fsx disc in, click the fsx logo and the fs9 ( :-?) splash screen popped up, followed by some error messages stating, if I remember right, that the scenery.cfg file was missing (or damaged, can't remember). I found this odd because I had not touched the cfg file or any other of the fs9 files since I'd installed it and it failed to run (more on that later). This has necessitated a complete reinstall of fsx and a long-winded manual removal of fs9 (it simply refused to buggar off when I started the automatic install process).

Before this, both EE2 and FS2004 had seemingly installed, had got to their respective splash screens and then gave me error messages resulting in the games failing to run. Repeating the process merely got the same results.

I have read that vista is unable to run many older bits of software without suitable drivers. Is this my problem and if it is, where can I get drivers for the two games I mentioned - or is it not that simple? Bear in mind please any advice will probably need to be given in detail and without using computer jargon because I have little knowledge at this level of computing (or almost any level for that matter). For example, I know in essence (and only in essence) what drivers do but I haven't a clue as to how they work, how you get them onto your system (install or otherwise?) and what they will solve/won't solve.

Any help would be very much appreciated - as a sidenote, both games worked absolutely fine on my old, not-designed-for-gaming pc which ran xp.

P.S. My version of vista is home premium. It came pre-installed on the pc, which is a dell xps-420.

I don't run Vista, but I did notice something screwy when I uninstalled the FSX demo from my XP machine. The uninstaller removed my FS9 registry entries. After the uninstall, I tried to start FS9, and the machine told me that it wasn't installed.

I don't know if the two issues are related, but since others are running FS9 on Vista without issue, maybe the problem is in FSX/FS9 compatability ? :-?

I don't know what to tell ya about the other stuff though.

Is it a laptop? Some laptops come with Vista HP 9 month trial...making you buy an OS when it expires...may be it. I have Vista and I have FS9 and FSX loaded up and it all is fine (except FS9 loads REALLY slow and the aircraft select section takes forever to load too...)....

Did you try running the games in FS9 compatibility mode?

No, it's a desktop. And I've had it for a lot less than 9 months anyway - though I'm certain this version isn't a 9 month trial.

Esselbach; how do I activate that, and will it solve problems with other games?

May be it's just me, but I wait many years before upgrading to the latest super-dooper Goodies...Operating System, Processor, Graphics Card, Drivers, etc, etc..to ensure that all/most of my zillions of favourite old Games still work..

My Win XP SP2, Socket A AMD 2600+, AGP 7800 GS with original Drivers, ensures that most of my old games run superbly....(and FS 2004 runs flat-out!) :)...!

There are even times when I have to re install my copy of Win '98SE and my old 3DFX Voodoo Graphics Cards to enjoy my many old games... :)...
(Never throw anything away!...;)...!

Paul...an "Old Game" enthusiast... :-*...!

...newer is not always better...;)...!

Youre not the only one... and im using the version that is said to be the worst (64 bit one)

Maybe we should start a Vista fan club. ;) I have never had a problem with vista either.
