Switching from WinZip to the default version.

My 45-day evaluation period for WinZip is over and I'm trying to figure out how to switch back to the normal zip program that came with Windows Vista. I needed to use WinZip on some occasions because the standard zip program didn't support *.rar files and a few of the addons that I have normally came in *.rar format. The rest are normal *.zip files. However, I can't use WinZip anymore and I can't find a way to switch back to the default zip program in Vista. Does anyone know how? Or does anyone around know of a free zip program that supports *.rar files as well but won't turn into a pumpkin on me like WinZip did?

I just checked the settings in Windows Vista and 'zip' files are opened up with Internet Explorer.

As for 'rar' files, I always used the program WinRar

Well, that didn't work. If anything, it made things worse by causing my browser to flicker indefinitely until I logged off my computer. ::)

I'm not mad at you, but I didn't change anything, so there should be no reason why it's messed up

I know how to fix this on WinXP but have no knowledge of Vista. The right-click Extract All option should extract zipfiles using the Windows 'Compressed Folders' utility.

The WinZip evaluation version has had a limited trial period for years. I don't know why people use it unless they intend purchasing it. Too late now but if you do try it don't let it become your default unzip program. Then you can uninstall it at any time without messing everything up.

I've tried most of the freeware alternatives & ALZip is very much like WinZip. http://www.altools.net/ALTools/ALZip/tabid/53/Default.aspx
The latest version is Vista compatible.

You are a life saver! I just tried it out and I'm quite surprised by how simple and straight forward ALzip is. Thank you so much for showing me this. WinZip really bites the dust. ;) ;D

I finally got the issue fixed. If you set Windows to upen up ZIP files with C:\Windows\Explorer.exe, Explorer will be able to open them up without any problems.
