Free anti-virus search

Hey Guys, Sure hope your day went well for you, and tomorrow much better,

I need help.   My anti-virus program is playing games with me.   It is free and I never had any problem getting upgrades until NOW.   Now "they" set a time twice in the evening that I can get upgrades - - - - and they must be right on the exact minute. Even then I still can't get the upgrades.     Then "they" try to tell me to BUY their costly one.  It is the AVG free edition.   It did NOT load up the PC with a lot of files to slow down my FSX.   Well THAT's all history NOW.

Can anyone tell me of a "free anti-virus" program that wont load up my PC. with a lot of files ?   This is very important to me because I once had an anti-virus program that when I got rid of it, - - -  I was still deleting their files  from my PC months after I removed it.   They had invaded my entire PC  - - -  they were into everything.   Can you picture what that did to my Flight sim ?

Thanks for your help,  have a good one,   caveman

I have AVG free and have never ran into that problem. Do you have the latest version(7.5)? An alternative would be to go to the Grisoft website and manually download and install the updates.

I use Avast (free home) and highly recommend it.

If you want a free anti-virus... stick to AVG or go change to Avira. If your AVG isn't working, then uninstall is and install is again.
But now let me tell you something... you would be better off with an Anti-virus like NOD32 (if you're an advanced user) or Kaspersky (simpler than NOD32 but almost as effective). Belive me... the $50 those AV cost are well worth it.
Finally, remember to couple your AV with Anti-Spyware software. I advise you to get Spybots... it's free and it's the best one out there!

Hey Guys, Good morning to you.

Sure do thank you for your responces.   My version is:7.5.446,    I've never had any problems before but now I keep getting that the updates failed ALSO.   My PC is my backup PC and it is a real sorry excuse for a PC.  My real PC is in the shop being looked at so I'm stuck with this TOY. :)

Come to think of it - - -  I don't think my "real PC" has that problem ! :-?       Is it possible that there is something in my settings that is causing this ?   I'd really like to keep this antivirus as it's never loaded up my PC with a lot of files.  The only other fault I've found with it is,  it MUST be turned off for me to re-set my password in this site.

Anymore input is indeed welcome.   Have a good one.   caveman

You should be able to manually check for updates to AVG at any time. Try this now.

Find the AVG icon in your System Tray (at bottom right of your screen) & right-click on it.
Select Launch AVG Control Center & click the Check for Updates button.
Click the Internet option to start the process.

Hey Guys, thanks for your help.   The problem is solved.   I re installed the AVG antivirus  and there's no more trouble.   Everything is working as it should.   I don't know what happened but this micky mouse PC of mine has done crazy things before..[ gotta blame something    ;)    other than myself ]   ;)

OK here's one. I can control precisely when AVG scans start by turning of it's built in scan scheduler and running it through Windows Task Scheduler. Now here's my question: Has anyone been able to schedule AVG updates through Windows Task Scheduler? It would be much better than having it run it's update between a range of times. Reminds me of scheduling for a repairman's visit.
