Help Concerning Downloaded Files/Winzip

Postby Stubbedtoe18 » Sat Sep 22, 2007 4:23 pm

My winzip trial has recently expired, and I did take it off my computer so that it the files would not be in winzip mode.  But now all of my downloaded files show up as an icon instead of having the zipped folder image.  Does anyone know how to convert the folders back to being zipped folder icons when I download new files?  I can't extract all of them at once, now I have to search through each file to extract.  Thanks.

I had the same problem once. The little file posted here should fix it. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Alternatively you could install a freeware unzipper. There are plenty to choose from. This one is similar to WinZip. http://www.altools.net/ALTools/ALZip/tabid/53/Default.aspx

Yah, they still look the same and still don't show up as zip folders.

Cheers! If you are using Windows XP or Windows Vista, you don't need Winzip or any other added zip file extrator...Windows XP and Windows Vista both have their own built-in zip file extractor. Download the zip file, right click on it, click extract all and go from there. Make sure you deleted the Winzip folder from your program files...Add/Remove in the Control Panel doesn't always work by itself. If you're running below Windows XP, disregard this post  ;)
Hope all is well in your world today

No, I knew about that earlier.  Though I used Winzip, the download expired, and now am stuck with files that are no longer in the format they were before.  I have to enter the files one by one and click extract, and am unable to just select them all and then click extract.  It's a real hassle.

Sounds like you need to re-associate the file and manually change the icon.

Changing the icon is the problem. IIRC
That's what the little file in my link is for. It worked for me.

Well paint me purple, there it is at the bottom of the list. Guess I should've looked, eh? ;D Nice link Doug. Well worth a bookmark
Doesn't TweakUI for XP have a restore all icons to default feature?

That's possible. I don't have TweakUI. I only wanted to restore one default icon & that REG file did the trick
