And am I glad!  

Norton Antivirus came with my new computer, so I used it until my free subscription ended.  When it ended, I uninstalled NAV and now I'm using the Microsoft firewall and Windows Defender.  I got a noticable improvement in performance!  And I don't have a lack of memory either, I have 2 Gig DDR2!

It may no longer be a functioning program, therefore you got the performance increase, but Norton still lives  on your machine waiting for the right time to ressurect itself and melt your computer from the inside out. (OK, I admit that I made the last part up, but trust me, Norton's still there. But it shouldn't cause you too many more problems.)

It's not all still there a bit misleading. Norton does leave some files deep in the Windows directory that are not installed. It's not anywhere close to the whole program.

Bits and pieces of Norton will be dotted all around in your Registry, occasionally popping up and wondering why you are not still using it, and recommending that you download the latest up-dates, etc, etc, etc....constantly...!

As as been mentioned, the only way to completely clear your system of all traces of Norton is to perform a total re-format of the Hard Drive, and therefore deleting the entire Registry.

Then re-install Windows.

Been there, suffered it, done it, sorted!......!

My base unit came with Norton... but I've never activated it as I was aware of the horror stories from this and other forums.
Is it still on my system though? It doesn't show ANYWHERE on the HDD or in "All Programs" but I know how good it is in hiding itself..

A detailed search of the Registry will find many Files, with obscure names, dotted around everywhere..
They can be deleted, one by one, but then there is always the danger of corrupting the Registry, which will necessitate a re-Format anyway... ...!

(I suspect there is someone in Sim V who knows the details of all these Files, and can list them)......!

Mr. Norton goes to great lengths to prevent you from removing his beloved program in it's entirety....trust me.......!

Now that I've sent all of you down the wrong path, I must confess.  I goofed!  It was McAfee that I got rid of on my computer.  Believe it or not, net gaming has improved.  But there is more to the story.  My wife has a 6 month old laptop.  She/I/we always exit out of the Norton install when it pops up.  Last week, she got an adware popup, so I thought I'd give Norton a whirl.  So I installed it.  It took about 20 minutes to install, and when it tried to reboot to complete the install process, it failed.  So I did a hard reboot and when Windows came up, Norton brought my wife's computer to it's knees.  I couldn't uninstall Norton fast enough.  Now she uses the Microsoft firewall and Windows Defender too.  So far, all is well.

If you're comfortable with your OS, there's no need to be afraid of the registry.  Just back it up first, and create a restore point and just use common sense.  There's some portions that are complicated to tackle, but many registry entries are fairly intuitive.  Start out by just taking a look around.  Then if you find a dll or some other file in your directory structure that is worth investigating, just do a search in regedit.  You'll be intrigued with what the registry may show you.

...now is the time to pop into your Registry. and see just how much "stuff" is still left in there......!

P.S. My CD version of Norton System Works did not even include an "uninstaller", for obvious reasons, (They don't want the user to remove the Program!), and Add/Remove in Settings-Control Panel doesn't do the same job in completely removing the whole of the Norton installation!
