Windows components missing?

I've recently had to send my computer away to be fixed, and, only after having it back for about a month now, I have noticed that a few things are missing that should normally be there after a regular XP reinstall. Firstly, I don't have Paint, or any of the programmes usually found in the Entertainment, or Games menu of the All Programmes list. This didn't/doesn't bother me, as I almost never used these, but it's just something I've noticed. Now today, after installing a new microphone/webcam, I went in Sound in control panel, and when I clicked on volume on the 'Audio' tab, I was told that SndVol32.exe was not installed. Now, I can't say either way, if this was present when I did get my computer back, but I do have 2 questions:
1) Will the lack of SndVol32.exe have any consequences?
2) How did the file disappear in the first place, and why are none of the programmes installed under the Entertainment, or games tabs?

The only reason I ask, is that it has worried me slightly that if these are missing, I'm not entirely sure what else could be missing, that could be vital.....

Cheers,
Alex

Hello Alex...

Do you have the full, Microsoft Windows XP version of the installation disk in its Box....?

....or just a made-up disk of odds and ends, supplied by the Computer supplier...

...or no disk at all... :'(...?

Cheers...!

Paul... ;)...!

Some Computer shops don't give you the full version of Win XP....just an OEM version, of their choice... :o...!

P.S. ..just a thought....On the Installation disk there is an option, a list to to tick off, to give you extra "things", accessories, etc, which are not included during the standard installation...;)...!

...found it...Start > Settings > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Components...the list of bits to add...pop the Windows disk in... :-*...!

LOL...! Thanks Fozz,

Yes, I guess you are probably right, although I didn't actually take my machine to a national computer chain, more of an independent shop. I did give them both of the OS disks Dell sent me, but they didn't return either.... I suppose I will have to borrow a friends disk, as I am simply adding components....

As for the SndVol32.exe, I have founf that I can simple copy the .exe file over from a working copy of XP, and all should be fine  ;)

I would recommend getting you Dell discs back, if you gave them 2 one was Windows the other probably drivers for hardware that may be proprietary.
Sounds to me like they installed a image they had probably set up for specific purpose such as performance which is why there is certain stuff missing.
