I was messing around with my ancient HP (Windows 98 lol). It says it can't find a file named COMMAND.EXE. It won't let me start any applications without this file. Anyone know what it is, what it does, or how I can replace it?

Command.exe is a is a process which belongs to the DOS command line tool. This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Command.exe is also a process belonging to the Adtomi advertising program by Adtomi.com. This process monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author's servers for analysis. This also prompts advertising popups. Command.exe is also a process which is registered as a trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. These processes is are security risks and should be removed from your system.

If you can, click on start/run, type MSCONFIG, and look on the startup tab for something running the command.

Ok, just tried it. It says "Window cannot find Command.exe. This is needed to open all files of the type "Application"."

So what should I do?

Reinstall or repair the OS, this will replace any needed files that may be corrupt or missing.

Command.exe is a process that should not be disabled, unless you know that it is not needed, it is a ligitimate Win 95/98 process. But there is a known trojan that uses the same name.

Is it possible that you did a virus/spyware scan and this utility found this as a trofan and removed it? If so it may be in a quarantine file and possibly replaced from there.

This computer is so old, I can't even do a system recovery. It just locks up when I try.

I can check the quarantine file, but I doubt if it's there.
