I would like to know which video formats are the most portable, compact and of good quality. I find that many videos give trouble because of the codecs used. What would you recommend?
thanks

PS: Actually I've been downloading .flv (flash) files from youtube.com and want to convert them to a more widely supported format without gaining too much size and keeping the quality.

Well...avi might work but there are loads of different codecs to use, which one is the best? And when I convert with the divx codec I get the divx logo on my video, huh! >:(

And what about mpeg, mpg, mp4 etc..etc...??
I'm quite confused  :-/  ???

just use .avi Its the most universal codec to be found. Also the most compactable.

I concur about avi files... as for what parameters to use when encoding, your best bet is to start with whatever default settings you're using for conversion to avi, then try again with a change or two if that isn't satisfactory.
I can't tell you much more than that as I am pretty green at this... but for best quality for size, as well as compatibility, .avi is your best bet.
