my parents are saying that flightsim has no point, so i want to know what you think is the most educational pc game (not that i'll change my ways, but...)

Educational Computer Game is an oxymoron.

They all are, wanna build an empire? Wanna learn to fly? Run a zoo? Run a city? Build things, Military style killing? hey...... They are all educational in their own right...... but BF2? hmmmm I dunno thats up to you to decide! Cheers, Gunny

Flight Simulator is the most educational. It teaches you how to understand the instruments on the panel, how to fly a pattern, shows you the basics on how aircraft fly; heck, even Rob Machado's videos are helpful.

And most games are more than educational, many help develop and fine tune motor skills

I would have to say FS, just due to the fact that aviation has many things you need to learn to be proficient and FS9 helps cover a lot of it, from basics of flight to weather to understanding what instrunments mean , how they work and why you need them.

Also it seems that it keeps you from hanging out with the bad kiddies LOL

But you must admit many people don't understand why it is we all love aircraft and the addiction they contain. Too some there is no explaning nor is it worth us to waste our time trying too

I have a cousin who loves the CFS series and the FS series. And he doesn't even like flying.

You must realise that FS is a simulator, not a game. Therefore it is directed at being educational in the ways of flying. All the others listed are games and not educational in any useful sense.

Well I guess it would be FS. If you use the sim as intended (real flight to the books) then yes it is educational. However the reason my parents fund my computer venture is because I dont play as many games as use Adobe CS2. I am very proficiant in photoshop, can read and write HTML fluently, know most JAVA. Also along with my software knowladge I am quite the tech junkie when it comes to hardware (infact I'm kinda the local Geek Squad in our town). So my time spent on the computer went twards getting me a job. Currently I work as a floor rep at the local staples, and when I turn 17 my mother is getting me a basic internship at her office (High tech company. I'll be working with their network group).

However theres another point to be argued here. Professionally signed gamers can make upwards of $30K a year + the free stuff from sponsors. There are two CSS players in my school signed by some team that competes all over the world. Recently one recieved a Blizzard X1900XTX from sapphire tech, all he had to do was recommend it to people saying that "I'm a pro gamer, and I like it. You should have one too" Personally I am not signed, however my clan (~ALBINO~) usually makes top 3 in many of the LANs we go to, and therefore we all have gotten some pretty cool parts. We are going to compete in Nor Easter '06's CSS turney, and if we win we all get our choice of a BFG Tech 7900GT, PowerColor X1900XL, or a DFI Lan Party SLi or Crossfire board.

Though I am inclined to agree with your parents. Sitting on a sim for houres at a time is a waste, unless you are or plan on being a pilot. Your best bet in winning them over is to become proficiant in hardware / software. Show your skills off to them there. Then do a few jobs for their friends. Tweaking their PCs to be faster, building new systems etc. Then when you have a good client base (like me) your parents will see that PCs are truely a good hobby for you to spend time with, and wouln't mind if you play video games.

Sitting in front of a sim for hours on end actually can be beneficial-I've found a way for it to be.

When I'm obsessed with shooters and sit playing them for hours, I'm completely occupied.  THAT is a waste.  When I fly a four hour flight in FS, I'll climb to my cruising altitude and then once I'm established in cruise, I'll do schoolwork.  That simple.  By playing FS, I prevent myself from getting caught up in games that would prevent me from getting work done.

I always like computers. I don't know anything about computer programming, but I am determined to major in it. However, I do have extensive knowledge and experience in 3D modeling for FS. It's not much, but it's a start. And just like a couple of you, I have gained just enough technical experience to get my relatives out of some situations.

Other than that I have long way to go.

FS is a simulator, which menas it simulates real life. you could use this training for real life (and if you use X-plane, get hours!!). whereas using Sim City 4 will NOT help you become mayor, Zoo Tycoon won't help you in becoming a zoo keeper, and ditto for the others.

so my Vote goes to FS.

'other...' leaves a big open grey area to actual educational games...

I must say that I've found the recent Flight Simulators very educational.
Over the past 10 years or so, of flight simming I have learnt a lot of things that I didn't know before, regarding flight dynamics (aerofoil sections), weather conditions and effects (cloud types/wind/precipitation, etc), various engine types and specifications (useful mechanical knowledge), airframe construction, (balance/ailerons/elevators/flaps/wheel configurations), aircraft instrumentation (inner workings, etc),  aircraft radio communication and navigation (how it all works!), the list goes on......!

As a lifetime professional electrical/electronics/mechanical/ designer and engineer the flight simulators have certainly broadened my horizons...  ;)...!
