until recently was always able to do an MS update without problems. Now when ever i try the "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB92130) although downloaded fails to install.
And because it fails the install process i can no longer update the xp home operating software with the critical or recommende updates.
Question : has anybody encountered the same problem recently ansd if so what did you guys do to over come it
thanks

There is usually a link to get to the downloads without using the validation tool, look towards the bottom of the page.
But going this route you may have trouble seeing which updated that it is you need.

Are you using Fire Fox or Internet Explorer as your web browser? M$'s sites only work with IE. Well, there are extensions that gives FF that ability, but I would use IE instead just to be safe.

This thread is kinda confusing.
If it's what I think it is *wink* there are a few, well-documented ways around Genuine Advantage involving "Manage add-ons"..
Or maybe I'm confused.. which is normal.. ;)

My suggestion is not the only solution and I'll admit to that. But I have to point out that certain web browsers tend to be a factor in these situations. One time, I couldn't download any updates from M$ while using Fire Fox. However, if you still are using Internet Explorer, check to see if your security settings are not affecting the authentication process.
There are just so many factors to consider that some situations like yours might require jumping through hoops to get what you need.

Are you sure about that? I'm mean, you're opening up a can of worms for all the viruses out there.

And now we know why OS's cost so much, and we need validation tools and crap installed on our pcs.

again thanks for the info/
i turned off all the antivirus/spybot, firewall etc. and turned down all security features and than tried again. it seems the program downloaded but wont install. so there we have it nothing worked so far.
oh, think i'll leave it alone ( after having turned everything back to full security) until the wifey goes on vacation and than i'll do a clean install of the XP OS unless one of you guys comes up with an other way/possibility for installing the validation tool
