.exe etc...

Postby cloud9 » Wed Jan 04, 2006 3:52 pm

Not sure if this is the right place but...

On my computer if I try to rename something it will be unstable if I don't put .exe or .jpg etc. next to it.

This only started the other day

Any ideas
Andrew

Does the file actually become unstable or do you just get a warning that it may become unstable?

The warning is just Windows SOP, "We think you're too stupid to operate a computer so we're going to protect you from yourself."

My system has done this for as long as I can remember.

You can't just rename a file with no extension or an incorrect extension and expect it to behave normally.

Open a new-text file.txt, type some garbage into into it and rename it new-text file (no extension).  Do you see the warning?  You should.

Now Send the file to to Notepad.  Do you see the same garbage?  You should.

Maybe it's SP2 but it's done that for me as long as I can remember.

Maybe I change file names more often than you do - I do it a lot and I'm used to it.

It's only a warning.  If you rename file.txt to file.mp3 you should expect unstable results.

no no instead of what I usually rename it to (e.g. fs9_readme) it makes me do fs9_readme.txt etc.

Windows gets uncomfortable when you try to create files with no extension or change extensions.

I often write batch files as .txt files so I don't accidentally click on Open instead of Edit.  When I am finished and rename it .bat I always see the warning.

It won't force you to add .txt to the file name but if you try to open a file with no extension you will see the "Windows does not know what to do with this" dialog.  Any time I see a file with no extension I just Send To notepad.  I believe there is a way to make this the default action for any unknown or missing file type but I haven't bothered to implement it yet.

In summary, don't worry about it.
