Boot-Up log file...whereabouts..?

Postby Fozzer » Tue Aug 30, 2005 6:05 am

Hello Lads... ;D...!

...just a little bit of info needed... ;)...!

Whereabouts is the read-me, Boot-up Log File located in Windows XP...?
You know....All that fascinating, useful DOS boot-up "stuff" that you would love to read, but disappears as quick as a flash during boot-up before you have time to read the first flippin' line..... :'(...!
LOL...!

(It tells you what programs are being loaded during boot-up).

I've managed to find it once before...(but that was probably yesterday)... :-[...!
LOL...!

Ta, all...!

Paul... 8)...!

Um I don't know about a log file...but I do know....

click start, click on run, type msconfig.exe and hit enter

From there you can see what windows loads and tell it not to load certain programs along the way.

Also to shut down windows services there are various ways...

To control how windows deploys services,
goto run and type 'services.msc'.

Event Viewer is the name of an app that will display a log of everything that happens in the computer, including bootup.

It is found under administrative tools in all programs under the start menu.

If administrative tools cannot be found, you must enable it by right-clicking on the start menu and selecting properties, then the start menu tab, and then click customize. Click the advanced tabs at the top of the window that appears and then scroll down to the administrative tools option and then choose the option to tell it to display admin tools in all programs.

Hi Auto....
Ta, Mate...got it... 8)...not quite the same thing tho'...!

...ain't Win XP bleedin' complicated... :'(...!

In good-old, simple, Windows '98SE, the Boot-up Log File notepad read-me, just listed all the DOS boot-up commands exactly in the sequence, and the same form as they appear on the DOS boot-up screen.... ;)... 8)...!
Example:
*************************
The installed graphic card details...
Memory installed...
Award Bios details...
System check...OK...
...(the sequence of various programs loaded)...>>

C....>
C....>
C....>

Etc, etc,
*********************
All the above details were available exactly as they appeared in sequence, in a "notepad" log file in Win '98....users of Win '98SE will remember it...;)...I wondered if this same arrangement was available in Win XP...?!
(All these visual details quickly disappear during the normal (short) boot-up period and cannot be noted in time on the screen)...!

Cheers Auto...!

Paul...Sticker on my bike...
"I love Windows '98!"
LOL... ;D...!

This is what I am after...
In Windows '98 there is is a "Bootlog" text file, (77kb long), in the Windows Directory, and details the complete progress of the Windows bootup sequence, indicating success/fail.
Excellent for locating any faults, and where they occur in the sequence during boot-up.
This log file doesn't seem to exist in Windows XP...!

Below is a small section of my Win '98 Bootlog file>>>

[00004446] LoadSuccess = VCOMM
[00004446] Loading Vxd = C:\WINDOWS\system\VMM32\IFSMGR.VXD

etc...etc...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This Log File gets refreshed during each boot-up, and indicates the progress, success or failure, of each program in the sequence....useful for fault-finding....!

Cheers all...!

Paul.

press f8 while booting (when the BIOS has done the harddisk stuff and all other card inits are done) then a  menu will show, choose the logging option from there and it will record what is happening
