Help with Downloader-YK virus?

Postby JBaymore » Tue Apr 19, 2005 7:33 pm

OK... one of the buggers got me this morning.

I have current Mcafee with up to date definitions, Mcaffee antispyware, Adaware SE, Spybot Search and Destory, and Mcafee personal firewall.  It STILL got in... and even though Mcafee SAYS the machine is clean.... as do all the spyware programs...... it is STILL there.

I still get the occasional infamous "WARNING:  Windows firewall detected suspicious network activity on your computer.  Malicious software codes try to steal your privacy information, such as credit cards.... "  and so on.  This pop up masquerades as a Windows message... but the virus sites say it is the trojan itself.

SO....... how the heck do I kill this thing?

best,

..............john

You can try going to Symantec and see if they have a removal tool for that Trojan.

I had contracted some nasty buggers here awhile back. My AVG didn't stop it nor would it find it, even after update, when a ran a full system scan. Spybot and AntiSpy didn't see anything either.

Then a ran over to Stop Sign and ran a free scan. Found several trojan downloaders plus lots of spyware, then if fixed them all.

I have been so impressed with this Stop Sign that I bought it. Love all it's features.

I just ran over and checked at Symantec for you, and didn't find anything on a virus threat by that name.  Pick up a copy of Moosoft Cleaner (Google it) and run that.  It picked up stuff that Norton missed.  It's free to try, and the trial lasts like 30 days or so...
Great edit, Bob.

Google it.

Also try Housecall ...... it's an online virus checker. ... I think it also has a virus encyclopedia with methods for dealing with the nasties.

Well I noticed this past week that my anti-virus software is updating as much as five times a day, this means that something is either getting ready to outbreak or already has but hasn't become public knowledge yet.
So just to be safe I did try Stop Sign , after a hour of it downloading and installing then a hour and a half scan it found four trojans, or what it called trojans but are actually programs that I use. I personally found it useless, and as with all others a waste of time to install and have it scan but not remove anything without paying for it.
A true trial version of software should allow you to see exactly what it does, and removeing or fixing the found problems should be included, so to me Stop Sign doesn't work. Sure it supposidly can scan files but I don't know if it is worth purchasing because I don't know if it removes anything , Of course when they realized I was going to remove it from my computer they were kind enough to give me a pop up offering to remove it for free, I don't need the hassle.
So I tried a true "trial" of CounterSpy which located and removed 5 known threats that my other programs missed ;)

Of course as with all "trial" software nothing is saying that the free version didn't install known threats and remove them to make it appear that thier software works better than some others ;)
Not like this isn't common practice to force a sale ;)
