Are you using something like Get Right? or just your browser downloader?
If it is the browser downloader depending on the browser you use you should be able to find a setting in the "preferances" using Netscape, in IE I belive it is in the "tools/internet options" .
Netscape offers you three windows you can have display or not just by checking the box next to it. Don't use IE so can't tell you what exact setting your looking for but the above might help you.
Good Luck!

p.s. If I'm not mistaken unless you direct your download to a specific place, Windows will place it either in your documents or on the desktop, my guess is that if it were placed on your desktop you would have seen it so look in your documents ;)

Gogi. I forget which IE option you need to change now. Try right-clicking on the link to the file & select the "Save Target As" option. That should do it.

I've used DAP for downloading all my files for several years now. If you use that or another download manager you won't have this problem again. http://www.speedbit.com/DAP7/Default.asp?

I've got the same problem. It used display a box that said "Save, Open, or Cancel" Down in the corner there was a box that was check-marked. it said "Always ask before opening this type of file" I accidentally unchecked it so now when i attempt to d/l something, its downloaded to a temporary folder  i can never find.

Have you looked in "My Computer" "Local disc"?
I notice there is a folder there titled "Temp", although nothing is ever in there, I'll remove it and it comes back so obviously it is created by windows.
Also if my browser overtakes a download it is set to download into "My Documents".
I would recommend checking your browser settings, or better yet get a download manager such as the one Hagar posted a link for, they are more reliable, resumes broken downloads and I have never once had a incomplete download using one whereas with the browser download if it gets interupted I have to start over.
