Download troubles

When I would download before, I used to be able to select the place I wanted to download the file to, before the download started.  Now it dosen't work.  The download just starts on its own and downloads to 'temporary folder'.  How can I get it back to the way it was before?  

PS.  I'm using XP
    -The problem occured when I accidentaly pushed a button, but I'm not sure what happened, or what I did.

I had the exact same problem but with 98. The only thing that fixed it was to restore my PC. Pain but better than a complete reformat.

It required some adaptation, but got the job done!
