I would definately recommend at least 7200 rpm, and the rest is basically personal preference...

I'm currently running a seagate 40GB, and a 120GB western digital caviar...both are 7200RPM and no noticable difference between the two (at least not that I'm aware of...) :-)

Check prices and capacity.  Iv'e seen 120G's/7200 promoed for as little as $60 at Fry's.  Problem is, gone when I arrive.  I paid $75 for an 80G UDMA 133 at a local shop.
Check your MOBO UDMA speed.  Likely 60 with the drive you are running unless your board is more current.  Current is 133 million bytes per second.   The faster drive will work at 60.  Also have seen 150 but don't know anything about them.
Do burn your files.  Rest you will install.  Broadband really helps the transition.

Im running two 80 gig seagate HDD's. One partitioned with partition magic 3 times, it has the XP pro opp system on the smaller partition. and the other 80 gig is also partitioned 3 times.

If my hdd fails i can still recover my files in the other partitions. also if i format my opp system for some reason i still have my files safe in my partitions.

alot of new motherboards wont marrie with less than 40gig drives. and HDD's are fairly cheap now dont scrimp with money, the great saving found today usualy becomes  tomorrows sorrow that you didnt spend the extra 30 bucks for the better one.  :) :)
