Question About JPG. compression???

Postby Mike Thurman » Fri Dec 26, 2003 10:51 am

Today i was looking at a topic on this part of the forum by paulB, the one with the sunderland. I saw the pics, EXTREMELY HIGH Jpg QUALITY, but the shots were only about 50-60 kb. Can someone tell me how to do this???

Thanks

Mike

Hi,

Firstly you would probably need to resize your screenshot. Secondly, it would depend on what program you are using. I use fireworks to get fuzz free JPEG's using their 'High quality' preset, Photoshop would be the same aswell.

Yep, Sam is right, most of the JPEG quality is lost during resizing. I do own Photoshop 7 & Fireworks MX 2004, but even so, I have found that freeware is yet again best ::)

I would recommend PixResizer from BlueFive Software (http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm).

Also feel free to try Photoshop & Fireworks (if you have them).

Using programs like paint to resize shots loses huge amounts of quality, so try a tool specially designed for the job ;)

Hope this helps a bit ;D

I use IrfanView as recommended on this site but I've noticed some quality loss when resizing my pics. Is IrfanView really worth it or should I change to some of the programs mentioned above?

Hi Mike

I use fsscreen ( a freeware programme) to grab the shots. Then I open them in PSP, select the part that I want, resize to 800 wide, then save as a jpeg.

Hope this helps  ;)

Mike I use Paint Shop Pro 8 and get great results. Remember first that you should "grab" shots at the highest possible resolution in FS. I use MultiGrab for getting the pics as you can just grab the screen. Its available from http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk
Then resize in your art package (remember to set for bilinear when resizing to keep the best resolution for the smallest file size).
Then its time to upload them here ;D

I use MultiGrab set on 100% JPEG quality (or the good old-fashioned Windows single-shot clipboard method). Always used IrfanView to crop/resize the shots as necessary. I like things quick & simple. Never had a problem but I'll never be a contender for a screenshot contest. ::)

I use FS Screen to take the pics in the Sim, then I open them using PIXresizer and convert them from 1024x768 to 800x600.

It works pretty good  ;D
