Hi Bird Man. Which OS are you running? Also, do you have a good anti-virus application?  I don't want to worry you but my first thought would be that this is a virus.

Kinda sounds like what the Blaster Worm virus or the Welchia Worm virus does.  One or the other recently came out and infected just Window XP, I think.

Anyway...it sounds like your computer was doing what my wife's did at her work.  Don't know about the Active X part but it made it keep trying to restart and when it got to a certain point it would tell her that it was going to shut down....and then it did.

Its windows Me. I have Antivirus on this computer but the other one isn't connected to the internet so I didn't think it could be affected. Im not sure if in its present state it will allow me to install anything but Ill have a go.
It doesn't seem to think about restarting itself. It just restarts with no warning at all. Its been doing it for a while but hasn't done anything like this before.

Ill try installing the antivirus. Thanks for your help.

I think this could be a Windows ME/XP bug. it is discussed in one of the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles. There is a patch to stop the "The system has recovered from a serious error" bug, and this fixes all restarting problems known to Microsoft. It worked for me. Havea look at it - it can't do any harm. Also try the Panda online virus scanner at http://www.pandasoftware.com.

I have finally sorted it out. It clicked when I went into microsoft word. It asked me for my name and stuff, I thought that this might mean that some information must be lost. In my ignorance I set off in deep exploration mode (with one of those hats with a light on of coarse) into C/Windows on a mission to click every button I could. Luckily before I had managed to destroy the Inards of my computer I came accross a program called 'SCANREG'. I clicked it. It did whatever it does and restarted and it all came back as if nothing had happened. I think something above (not a religios man) must have taken pity on me staring at a computer all day tearing my hair out...
Anyway........ Thanks For the responces everyone.

I know this is kinda late but one thing I have to say is even if it's not connected to the internet but it's networked to one that is it can still be affected over the network!

One final thing I use Zone alarms firewall (The free version) and AVG (The free one) I'm cheap but never had a problem.

O and also I have a problem were it just stight away shuts down but this is on a computer which is never updated as it's never on the internet so I think I might pop over a to microsoft website or let auto uodate do it and Update!
