98SE TO XP

I've decided to go from 98SE to XP simply because of the RAM restriction (512M) required by 98SE. Is this a prudent move? I already have the copy of the XP. I have two drives in my PC (20G & 13G). I've already copied all the valuable files, primarily Flight Simulator files, to CDs. All the other programs I can reload after. I know that if I "fdisk" my drives, I lose all files. Would it be wise to purchase a new larger drive (40-60G) instead? That will free one of the four ATAPI connectors which I wish to use with the Iomega ZIP250 I have. Also would it be wise to replace my 52X CD-ROM with a DVD-ROM? I already have a CD-RW installed. I have a 1.2GHz Athlon on a K266 mobo which eventually I will have to upgrade. Shall I just wait till then before making the OS shift?

Going from 98 to XP is a wise move.

I would personally buy a new HDD first, but that's just me.

You will not need to run Fdisk as XP is totally different to set up than 98.

Go into your bios, set your first boot device to cd, put in the xp cd and away you go.

Follow the instructions, then do this for best results (if you are using your old Drives)

When you get to where it asks if you want to set up windows xp, do the following:

1) Delete the logical partition

2) Create a new logical partition (leave the Size allocation at what is recommended)

3) Now format the volume using the NTFS file system

Once format is complete simply follow the instructions to install.

Make sure that when the computer restarts itself, go back into bios and change your fist boot device back to either floppy, or what ever you had it set on.

Following the above will give you a completely fresh and clean install and you should not have any problems.
