"Cannot find windows file"?

Postby Lethal.Ambition » Thu Apr 24, 2003 6:38 am

OK um, i don't where to post this and i am posting it here because i am going crazy!

I try to start ANY and i mean ANY program and it says the following error:

Windows cannot find 'C\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. TO search for a file, click the Start button and then click Search

I try IE and it gives me a different path but the same message. I was lucky to open this IE because of the help and support, i clicked and it opened an IE HTM page, i used the address bo and typed this

The main problem is i browse to where it says the file is not found, and it is there!
I start if from there and i get the same message.

I tried System Restore.......same.......HP PC System Recovery............same message, i am stuck. I don't know the safe mode keys.......i tried SHIFT+F8 but i bet it is not that. I pressed the keys during the blackscreen, i pressed it all the time and it didn't work. Any of you know it?

If i can get it to work under safe mode i will try to do a whole System recovery, loosing everything. Or maybe a system restore would be better?

I think it all started with my messed up Anti-Virus.
A backdoor gile bypassed it somehow and since i do a scan of my WHOLE drive it found that file 5 times! Different parts. I can't remember where.

I tried cleaning it, to keep the file, it may be vital for the system. It says it cleaned it. I scan again to be on the safe side, there it is again! OK delete this time, 3rd time it is not there.......

I try starting IE and it doesn't work. Hmm, the other programs didn't work either so i tried system restore, that didn't work either. I, with my novice expertise on Computers just forced a shut down by pressing the power button so it wouldn't save the changes. Nope, it stayed the same...

RIght now i am tying this and heading to MS and probably HP to find what the hell the problem might be. I am very disappointed. At least system restore or the system recovery should work!

Any help please and Mods, i don't know where this was supposed to go.

OK i find the following thigs VERY odd.....

am i in safe mode already? My computer started in less then a minute, the part where all the icons are next to the clock are gone, only 3, the internet connection one, windows task manager, and the sound one.

The usual ones like Messenger, and you know, the usual, are gone. And as soon as i got the desktop screen i pressed connect and it loaded just like that! and the thing was not even fully loaded yet.........am i safe mode! urgh how i hate this!

This might not help but it reminds me of an old trojan virus I picked up some time ago. I can't remeber the name but it preys on EXE files & spreads to others whenever you open any program. It even attacked my anti-virus program making it useless. Fortunately I managed to save all my precious files by purchasing/installing the latest NAV & using it together with the Windows Search function to scan all EXE files. This took some time but eventually fixed the problem completely without a reformat & reinstall of Windows. I was lucky.

what a darn coincidence, now that i remember, the virus was called......

backdoor.dhr or something like that and on the info part it said it was a trojan. That gives me an idea! I'll go to the website of the anti-virus, see if they got a cure.......i still don't know what you are talking about

Sorry. NAV = Norton Anti-Virus. I wouldn't be without it.

would you please tell me how you did it? I am installing the old one and hope it doesn't spread there, but the problem is that i have to restart to complete it's installation and if i restart won't it spread to it too?

This would only help if it's the same virus. I'm looking for more information. In my particular case I could not run NAV in the usual way but realised its icon was on the Windows Explorer toolbar. This feature will scan selected files & automatically fix them. I ran the Windows Search function & the  NAV icon was there too. I typed *.exe in the window to search for all EXE files & scan them with Norton. Fortunately it worked sufficiently for me to run Norton properly & do a complete scan.

If you can get internet acceess at all you can try Panda Active Scan here http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan ... l.htm#aqui.

It will scan and disinfect directly from IE.  There's nothing harmful in it - I just stopped using it because it took too long.

OK, good luck. I'm sure this will take much longer than 10 minutes but stick with it. ;)

Please tell us how you get on.

If you have a large HD and a dial up connection you can expect at least an hour to scan.
