RIP XP

Today being the last day MS will support Win XP, I am reading all kinds of articles advising people to stay off the internet until they upgrade or by a new computer. I haven't allowed windows to update for the last two years and I don't use Microsofts Security Essentials at all. (I think it's trash). No problems without those updates so why would no more updates be a big problem?
I guess I'll find out, but I think most of this hype is fear mongering.

Steve,

Even with the updates, I've never had any problems.

I think your last sentence is spot on!

This seems very odd. I'm downloading a WinXP update as I type.

Check this out --> Microsoft extends virus warnings for Windows XP to 2015

I meant to enquire at Sainsbury's Customer Enquiry Desk this morning when I popped in to for my daily dose of edible goodies, what version of Windows they were still using....

I forgot to ask, but I suspect that they are still using either Win XP or Vista!

Paul.... ..!

...but I did come out with lots of nice things to eat and drink to last me through the day...so all was not wasted!.... ...!

Roast Lincolnshire Sausages + everything else for Dins...and a bottle of Mulled Vino...HIC!... :o ...1

I know of this, But I can't understand the media hype.. I could imagine though that bank machines and etc don't use Quite the same XP software as we bought. I'm totally not sure though. ^-^

I'm not worried about getting hacked or infected tomorrow - I have a firewall and my Avast antivirus is keeping up to date.

I upgraded from W98 to XP because Mozilla stopped supporting it. I'll have to upgrade to W7 because (probably at Microsoft's pressuring) third party developers will stop supporting it.

Got a phone call from my daughter on Tuesday: "Dad, I read today they are stopping support for XP--WHAT DO I DO?"
So I tell her not to worry. But in the end it transpires she is worried about compromising her banking details..Not now but maybe in the future.
(She's not altogether dumb, that one  )

She's looking at me for advice, and although I think that her machine would be alright as is, I cannot run the risk of being "wrong" should she run into a security problem.

So I spent some hours yesterday installing a new Win 7 on her machine. (Which is a tad old for win 8.1)
This way now I cannot have a finger pointed at me for giving bad advice, should a problem arise..
