The best way is to have the OS on one drive, FSX on its own drive, fastest one you can get, most people like the WD Velociraptor - get the 300GB if you have the money.
On the FSX HD you put the necessary addons.
I have UTX, GEX, FSGenesis, SceneryTech, FEX, MegaSceneryX, MegaSceneryEarth, FTX and numerous freeware addon airports and other scenery. Not all of this has to go on the FSX drive.
In my system I have three drives, C: for the OS, D: for FSX and FSX addons that have to go on the FSX HD and E: as a data drive.
On E: I have GEX, MegaSceneryX, MegaSceneryEarth and FEX and that is because these are data bases, once loaded FSX does not need to keep going back and getting additional data all the time.
Since you can put MegaScenery products on a data drive you would think that FTX could also go on the data drive, but I posted the question on the FTX forums and they said that FTX should go on the FSX drive since that is the way the program was written. Anyway if you have a question about a certain payware addon post the question on their forum and see what they say.
