Password protecting firefox / IE

Postby Mass » Tue Oct 06, 2009 8:22 pm

Hey all.

Due to my computer often being left on at home, usually due to a download in progress, I would like to be able to set up my computer so that a password is needed in order to open / use firefox and IE.

I know that there is a way of doing this in IE but it means that a password is needed everytime you change web page, which frankly is a pain. So im asking if its possible to do this just for when you open the browser. Yet on the otherhand does not restrict internet connection so that said download can continue.

Thus meaning i can leave my download in progress and be safe in the knowledge my older sister cant get onto my computer and my younger sister cant access unsuitable sites.

Any ideas?

I don't believe that you can set up a "1 time log in password" for IE.   What you can do however, is set up your USER ACCOUNT to where you are required to put in a password every time that your computer resumes or comes out of SCREEN SAVER.

ASSUMING YOU ARE USING WIN XP HOME:

on the desktop: right click an open space.  PROPERTIES > SCREEN SAVER.  Set the screen saver to whatever you want it to be, then look for the box ON RESUME, PASSWORD PROTECT.   put a check mark / dot in the box.  APPLY > OK to close the window.

now, go to START > CONTROL PANEL > USER ACCOUNTS.   Set up your account with a password.   (granted every time that you restart your computer, or turn it off and then back on, you will have to put in your password.)

Now, when you go off to work, school, a friends house... your screen saver will turn on and if anyone tries to use your computer then they will have to know your password to be able to access ANYTHING on the computer.    ----- if other people in your house use the computer also, you could just log off of your ACCOUNT, forcing the LOGIN page to show... and if they have their own account, then they can log in to THEIR account and stay out of yours.

I already have my own account set up on the computer, but the new question is whether my download will cease should i be logged out?

For that eventuality i have the computer set to not require me to log in when resuming from screensaver, in fact i have it set to do nothing when i close the lid. but i change this when im not downloading, so those periods arent an issue.

so if the downloads will continue when i get logged out the issue no longer exists as i will set the computer to require the password again when i open the laptop.
cheers
