Windows silverlight

Postby expat » Wed Sep 09, 2009 5:39 am

Can someone please tell me in small easy words, preferably single syllable words what Windows Silverlight is. I have Googled it, but all I get is is jargon as below;

"Silverlight supports playback of WMV, WMA and MP3 media content[6] across all supported browsers without requiring Windows Media Player, the Windows Media Player ActiveX control or Windows Media browser plugins. Because Windows Media Video 9 is an implementation of the SMPTE VC-1 standard, Silverlight also supports VC-1 video, though still only in an ASF container format. Furthermore, the Software license agreement says VC-1 is only licensed for the "personal and non-commercial use of a consumer".[7] Silverlight, since version 3, supports the playback of H.264 video.[8] Silverlight makes it possible to dynamically load XML content that can be manipulated through a DOM interface, a technique that is consistent with conventional Ajax techniques. Silverlight exposes a Downloader object which can be used to download content, like scripts, media assets or other data, as may be required by the application.[9] With version 2, the programming logic can be written in any .NET language, including some derivatives of common dynamic programming languages like IronRuby and IronPython."

My computer (Vista) keeps telling me it is an important update. Help please.

2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Have you seen or heard of Cool Iris?

Windows Silverlight is M$ competing product to Cool Iris,

Basically, it's a media centered web browser, concentrating on pics,videos, & music rather than text. There may be more to them, but this is their main grab.

I've not tried the Silverlight, but I did try Cool Iris.  The best way I can describe it, is it looks like an iphone's menu.

IMO- these browsers are 100% useless, unless you are a totally media centered web person.

Thanks Shane, as I thought, just a waste of hard drive space ::)

Silverlight is like flash but with a better development environment.

You cant compare it with cooliris, as it is much more than that.

Oh and some online video sites require it...

Ivan is correct, I had read the description wrong, and thought it was a browser like Cool Iris, apparently it's only a plug in:
