How to create smaller zip files?

Postby Anxyous » Sun Aug 24, 2008 11:13 am

How to you create smaller zip files?

I just zipped 1,17GB of stuff to save space, and I ended up with a 1,12GB .rar file.

How can I decrease the size?

I think you can adjust the compression level on some zip software. Not sure which software has this option or how it affects the compressed files.

Is there any reason you're creating RAR format instead of ZIP?  It will all depend on the file types you're "zipping" up. Some file formats will compress more than others when zipped. WAV files won't compress much at all. No point in zipping up files that are already compressed like ZIPs or JPEGs.

Use 7zip. Free and easy. Has a compression level setter thingy. ;D Rar's are usually used for pirated software downloads that is why we are suspicious. ;) Sounds like you have more than one file there...so compress them individually into 100mb a piece.

I've heard of problems when you try to compress larger files. Wii might be onto something, try zipping smaller chunks, and you might do better. Also, try "Alzip". It allows you to compress files into many different types of formats.

RAR doesn't equal pirate! I use RAR format for most of my file compression as I find it better than ZIP.

I use peazip and I am able to use 3 very good compression modes, GunZip, Tarball, and 7Zip. Those are the 3 best ones at compression ratios.

Sometimes...but I use RAR high compression for files I won't view or don't want open and just throw them in the corner. ;)
