All ZIP-Archives Ruined

Postby Ecko » Fri Mar 31, 2006 3:31 am

Hi guys!

This problem started two days ago.
Like the title states, almost all of my ZIP archives are ruined right away... I download them, open them, and at least one, and often more of the files in the ZIP archive, is ruined.

I get this message; "Filename" the file is destroyed
Image

I primarily use Firefox for downloading, but I've tried Internet Explorer and sadly it happens with that one too. I use WinRAR 3.51 for extracting the files, but I've also tried WinRAR 3.57b, the same thing happened.

Any suggestions??

I really hope you can help me on this one guys!

Try using WinRAR as it can support ZIP formats ;)

What sort of connection do you have? I suspect the files are being corrupted during the download. If you have WinXP there should be no need for WinRAR or any other utillity as it includes its own compressed files extractor. I've used WinZip 7.0 for years with no problems at all. You can get the original unlimited trial version HERE

ADSL 2048/512 Kb

I've got WinXP, but once you've got an extracting program installed, you can't you the default WinXP program anymore, or at least it doesn't show up when you right click the file.

I'll try that old WinZIP and report back.

By the way, my router has been acting up lately, could that be the cause?

I discovered a way to revert to the WinXP default unzipper. I'll check it out if you're interested.

I would say that's quite likely. The files could be damaged if the download is interrupted for any reason. You could try a download manager* but I'm not sure they work on Simviation.

*PS. Try GetRight. http://www.getright.com/ Check this out. http://www.simviation.com/fssimviation.htm

Perhaps I should try downloading some zip files on some of our other PCs connected to the same router, and then see what happens.

In 5 mins. a brand new ZIP download is finished, and I'll see if WinZip can handle it.

OK. Good luck. Here's a tip. Set up WinZip with the Classic interface & use the right-click "Extract to folder ..............." option to unzip the files.

Ok, this is most definitely something not on my end only!

I downloaded the ZIP, transferred a copy to another PC and tried to extract the files on both PCs with WinZIP 7.0.
Same error on both;

Then I downloaded the same file on the other PC, transferred a copy, extracted, exact same error.

This is most likely a router problem then, right?

Im uncertain how routers work but something is corrupting your downloads, did you try a download manager as Hagar stated?
If not give one a try and see what comes up, I too have had some problems using the browsers downloading utility both FF and IE.

It just seems weird that all of the sudden, all of the PCs on my home network stopped functioning properly in regards to downloading of ZIP files only, doesn't it?

I don't know how routers work either. Have you changed anything recently like firewall settings or installed new security software? I don't know if these suggestions will help. http://www.simviation.com/accessprob.htm
