Java 1.4.2

I'm trying to install 1.4.2, because applications (online or off) that use Java perform miserably with 1.5.  However, when I try to install 1.4.2, I get a blue screen and instant restart in the middle of installation.  Google provided surprisingly no information.  What's going on?

AMD 64 3000+
BFG GeForce 6800
1024 PC3200

Stupid Java cache errors.

Uninstall all java virtual machines. Then install the setup you get from here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp

Get the offline install.

I've already been trying through "Add/Remove Programs".

Is there a place I don't know about?
