If you're used to FS2002 I would suggest CFS2. Not all FS2002 aircraft will be compatible but most FS2000 aircraft will work fine. You might need to realias the Panel and/or Sound CFG for them to show up. There are also plenty of proper CFS2 aircraft.

On the downside, CFS was never intended for modern jets. It's limited to WWII-style weapons with no guided missiles etc.

Vintage/modern mix: Strike Fighters. Great graphics,1960s aircraft and lots of add-ons.

Lock On: Modern Air Combat is an excellent simulation, however it doesnt't really have any story or anything, just a bunch of missions in a row.  The graphics are amazing though, although it is quite taxing on your system so make sure it is pretty fast.  You can fly the F-15C and A-10 on the american side and the MiG-29, Su-33, Su-27, and Su-25 on the Russian side.  I like it, however some people feel it is too real (or as some people say "hard").  Anyway, here is a few screenshots just to show you what it looks like...

That's the reason why I hate LOMAC. A sim like that deserves a dynamic campaign. But nooooooooo, deadlines and profit are more important than an interesting campaign.  >:(

Btw: You forgot the german MiG-29.

Well, yeah, there is also a Georgian Su-25 and Israeli F-15 too I guess.  It does really suck that there is no story or dynamic campaign, but it is a sim and there really is no deep storylines in war.  If you really want, you can download other people's campaigns or make your own too, so it is not so bad.

LoL, if people compain its too hard because the avionics and system simulation is too accurate then they should keep their butts in front of the TV and just keep jamming their X-box's and PS2's.  I suppose most of it is from hyper kids who can't settle down long enough to learn complex things and just want to shoot things up.

I just found my copy of Janes Longbow anthology in a box in my dads basement. Im gonna load it up tonight.

a side note: it is impossible to find any information on this game on the web. the janes website has nothing to do with games either, not surprising, that company does a lot of stuff, but they dont have any info about any of their simulations. kinda wierd.

I just got LOMAC and the learning curve is steep but I'm enjoying the challenge.
And Pacific Fighters is pretty good although you need to download a CDs worth of patches it is starting to come along nicely and become more enjoyable. ;)

my main trouble is the differance between FS9 and combat simming, took awhile for me to get used to it.

BTW-check out the link in my sig ;)
