IE6 Error

Postby Hagar » Thu Apr 22, 2004 8:24 am

I sometimes get an annoying problem with my IE6 browser. It works fine most of the time but crashes when visiting certain sites. I get the M$ Error message before the browser restarts itself. This means I can't use these particular websites.

I've asked friends to check the problem sites out & they work fine for them. This means the problem is somewhere on my system. I'm using WinMe + IE6 with all the latest updates. Maybe someone can suggest something. ::)

Here's 2 examples.
Shoreham Airport index page. http://www.shorehamairport.co.uk/default.asp
Airliners.net http://www.airliners.net

Thanks for any suggestions.

I used to use IE, but now use Firefox, it is very easy to use and offers more than IE offers, including updates to give you flash capability and activex if you need them.

Thanks Hi-D for the prompt suggestion. I took your advice & installed Firefox.* Result - problem fixed - no more crashes.  :D

Thanks again. ;)

* Excellent browser. Much better than Opera which I once checked out.

I have only just updated to IE6, but I might change as well. Can It handle all of my IE6 favourites?

It can, it automatically detects them and puts them in the bookmarks section, which is the same as the favourites section on IE.

It also has an address bar in the top right for search engines which you can add to it. I currently have google assigned but you can sign loads of others to it, all you do is type what you are looking for in it and it finds it.  Also i like the open in new tab option, it saves the windows task bar being clogged up, by putting a tab for each window in the browser itself.

I have used Netscape as my default browser for over a year.
Always reliable, security is great (never been messed with by hackers unlike IE), been looking into Firefox appears to be the same as Netscape, different skin???

The only reason I keep IE in my computer is a few sites I like only work through IE.
Downfall of Netscape, allot of software companies make programs that require IE, for toolbars etc, but who needs them? They are nothing but spyware anyway ;D

So too those who moved away from IE get ready to enjoy the web!! And forget about "Page cannot be displayed" !!!
Chances are you won't be seeing it anymore ;D ;D ;D

Netscape, Mozzila and Firefox are made by the same people.  They differ only slightly, i have used all four, i am on Firefox now because it is the latest release, and i really like it.  Any of the others are good aswell.

Here are some plugins for Firefox, Mozilla and Netscape from the official mozilla site:

Hi-D: I noticed that Firefox is still in a "development" stage, has it or have you had any problems with it yet?? And how is the Tunderbird mail program that goes along with it?
One reason I like Netscape is because of its speed, even though I suffer with a dial- up connection, Netscape is allot faster than IE, with absolutly no "Page cannot be displayed" windows!! Is Firefox compareable to Netscape or do you think it is better?

I have got no problems with Firefox, it feels more complete than IE if it is a developement browser.  I have no preferences of Firefox over Netscape, and neither with netscape over firefox.  It feels a lot better than IE.  Are you sure this is developement software because it definetly does not feel like it.  It is open source if that is what you mean.  Netscape, Mozilla and Firefox are open source.

Hi Hagar!

Sorry for the late reply. I know you've gone with Firefox now, but I know that IE6 bug well: it is fixed in one of the Microsoft Updates (IE6 Service Packs). It's a bug in one of the dynamic link libraries (DLLs), and that code is not run often. However when you visit a site that does use the code, it crashes IE.

If you ever go back to IE, always always always keep it updated ;)

Hi-D:
I read at thier site that they make " no promises" until it becomes Firefox 1.0, the version out right now is .8.
That is if I read it correctly???
I think I might download it and giver her a try anyway, can always switch back ;)

Ok thanks fretnstuff.

I think the browser is unbelievable for a development version, it feels so complete they could release as the 1.0 version and it would be still an excellent browser.  I recommend to anyone having problems with their current browser or fancy a change, to try Firefox.

There is a ton of plug-ins and stuff that go along with Firefox, I never knew you could have that much too offer in a browser. And I like the fact that you can decide what you want and it isn't "forced on you"!!! Truly customizable!!
I think they might have a winner!! IE will be gone when people start finding out about Firefox!!
