World of Warplanes

Postby Bubblehead » Fri Aug 21, 2015 10:51 am

I downloaded (for "FREE") the "World of Tanks" (+50Gigs capacity) and now I'm thinking about downloading the "World of Warplanes". I'm still trying to learn the games but I'd like the opinion of interested Forum Members if these games are any good at all. After FSX there seemed to be no other comparable flight games around. Thanks.

It's tricky to answer because everyone has slightly different expectations.

WoW just can't be compared to FlightSim. One is combat, the other civil. I dabbled a little in WoW and found it to be an encouraging but incomplete semi-sim. I'm assured there are ultra high realism modes and that I was playing a sort of mid-level tier but it lacked a certain atmosphere for me. I can't put my finger on why, but something about it felt a little shallow.

It's not a bad looking game and for the business model they've chosen it's astonishingly good value for content. I found the UI to be a bit obtuse but then I never really was one for tarting around with upgrades and experience levels and researching. If I'm offered to flya Spitfire, I expect a Spitfire of the designation offered to me without the need to fund research on what guns/bombs it can carry, armour and engine upgrades and so on.

Try it. S'not like you have to shell-out for it. And if it doesn't stick. Hit uninstall. I've not made it that far yet. I may go back and see what the American bombers are like. I've always been partial to those, but civil aviation is keeping me happy for now. That and after buying so much FSX specific hardware, it seems a bit daft to stow it all away for huge periods of time.

I also must admit that "War Games" never did turn me on, apart from the occasional stint with my CFS 2, in which I fly my little Cessna 150 to explore the scenery!....

So "General Aviation" in the FS 2004 and FSX Flight Sims suits me fine, and I leave shooting and bombing stuff to the U.S. Marines...

...they enjoy doing that sort of thing!.... ...!

Based on your opinion I've decided to delete the World of Tanks and the World of Warplanes. The games were just too complex. I'll stick to the old reliable FSX and Flight Deck 5 and 6.

Thanks

Remember that the MS Flight Simulator series (FSX being the last of that series and now carried on by Lockheed Martin as P3D) have never been intended as 'games' - although they do have that option. They were originally and throughout, designed as simulators - with the whole world there to be explored - and open to 3rd party addons to enhance the realism. remember that some payware FSX addons are so complex that they are used by commercial flying schools for training. And Lockheed Martin buying the rights of FSX from Microsoft kind of says it all.

I remember being given a copy of a very early edition of FS by a friend -- it was black and white and a very primative Meigs & Chicago that looked like it was all built with lego. (previously I had used an even more primative computer FS with a few instruments in the screen and a line as a runway on a black screen. That was way before windows came out)

Having said that -- it's still entertaining - but most 'gamers' will soon get bored by the lack of attacking aircraft, bullets, bombs, realistic explosive crashes and score progress to compare with yourself and others. They will go on and find a flying game - with many available in phone/tablet form these days.

Meanwhile that leaves the rest of us who actually like to pretend we are flying the real thing in FS. & there is actually no limit to the potential realism in FSX/FS2004 .. O0

For a short time I was lured into the world of DCS, Digital Combat Sim. Superb looking, complicated key operation for just about everything. But the worst aspect? I never got past training flights with a Sukhoi SU25 which flew like a lead-sled, had little fuel endurance, pretty near impossible to hit any ground targets, and a sitting duck................But it do look good graphics wise!
