Had to make the move,

Postby Steve M » Sat Jun 14, 2014 5:22 pm

My old machine gave up this morning and I had to buy a new one with Win 8.1. So I'm going through a kind of culture shock. Can anyone tell me how to get a shortcut to my desktop from my picture folders? I've been unable to figure it out.. I'm used to one click from an icon to get me there. (as opposed to click this, then that and that and then that)

"This PC" Icon on the Desktop > Pictures > Right click > Create Shortcut....

Places the "Pictures" Shortcut on your/my Desktop

Paul.
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.

I'm not understanding yet Paul, "This PC" icon, can't find it in desktop mode. In pictures no matter where I right click on whatever folder I don't see an option to create a shortcut. Thanks for the reply.

Sorry for the bad news, Steve.

Is the hard drive TOTALLY dead, or just no longer booting?

If it just won't boot you could add it to your new machine and save some files.

I used to use a small program about 15-16 years ago to recover hard drives, and/or data. But once I left that company I've never needed it again.

And I know for a fact that I no longer have a copy of it.

You do know that you can order Windows 7 Pro?

Anyway - Good luck

Thanks, I think the video card fried or maybe motherboard mishap. I can hear the winxp music as its booting but black screen. It was time to update anyway that old machine was nine years old and this new one has some decent specs. Right now I would just like to chop the balls off someone at Microsoft for putting out this over complicated piece of work. I do plan on reviving the old machine because my flight sim is on it. (If it's the motherboard there's no hope for it)

Old computer = Windows XP.

Got it.

There are a number of ways to make Windows 8 act more like Windows than a tablet computer.

Check out Start8 from Stardock.

The next question is - Do you have any XP programs that you REALLY need to run, but that aren't compatible with Win 8?

There's a free program from Oracle called VirtualBox.

Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 ), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6 and 3.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, and OpenBSD.

I use it to run different versions of Linux without ANY problems with my Windows 7 system. This IS NOT dual booting.

If you need to use it with Win XP read this - step by step instructions Installing Windows XP in Oracle VM VirtualBox.

You DO have options.

To put a shortcut to something on your desktop, rclick on the item, click SEND TO from the pulldown, then from that pulldown click DESKTOP (Create Shortcut). Bada-boom, bada-BING! thar she be :D

I don't know for sure if that's 1) what you were asking, and 2) what Paul was trying to say, but that's how *I* do it...Hope it helps a little teensy bit! ;)

Yep.... :D ...!

That's the sort of thing we were both trying to put over... :D ...!

Maybe each computer and OP System has a different way of showing "things" on the Desktop after boot-up.

With my Advent Tower BIOS, Windows 8.1, and Pale Moon* Browser, it automatically puts all sorts of Icons on my Desktop, including a "Windows C short-cut", and a "This PC short-cut" which gives me quick access to various Folders, from which I can create additional short-cuts to my Desktop using the right-click process... ...!

It takes a long time to get used to Windows 8....after the simple and trusty Windows XP!

Paul...being cut short!... :o ...!

*....."Pale Moon": A simplified and quicker version of the Firefox browser...(Thanks Webb!)

Thanks Pat and Paul, I'll try to show you what I mean. I can't find any "send to" anywhere in the files.

I have other icons I've put on my desktop but this one won't go.

GOD MODE

(Or any other name you want to call it)

This isn't only for computer nerds, anybody can use it.

Of course by giving away this secret I'll be banned.

With God Mode, you can easily access all the Administrative options and make any desired adjustments.

Basically - ALL options are in one place.

Invoke god mode to take control of settings in Windows 8
