Aircraft scrap yards

Postby X.G.Aus » Sat Dec 11, 2010 6:20 pm

Well, being a total noob in Flight simulations, a friend of mine, got me into it, showing me his little set-up, and was making a seat out of wood for well, his rear end.

I was wondering if any-one knows of air-craft scrap yards in Australia? (more or less, Victoria)

As I would like to get the seat from a jumbo-airliner, and fix it up for him, as A birthday present. (X-mas is too soon)

Cheers

XG Aus,

Welcome to the "Homebuild" section.

A little potential warning here.........

In general the scrap yards are now "onto" the flight sim simpit building community.  Stuff that is NOT reusable (certifiable) for use in flight used to be absolutely dirt cheap.  Not so anymore.

They have found a very aggressive and lucrative market in the simmers.  Do not be surprised to find that a good condition seat from something like a commercial 747 or the like with all the hardware intact and usable to sell in the $1000 range.

Just a little reality thought to maybe temper the idea before you get too committed to the idea before finding out the prices you might find.  Maybe in Aus. things are different.... but in the states...... not easy to find cheap stuff anymore.

best,

.........john

As John has said the real aircraft stuff is not cheap. I have used really good automotive seats that do a fine job. Mind you to find a quality set of seats from a wreaking yard is not cheap either. I ended up with two driver seats out of a Toyota Supra and it set me back $600. That was along time ago as well as I bought them as cool office chairs 20 + years ago. They just naturally migrated int my simpit when I stated constructing it 3 years ago

Good Luck

Thanks for the down-side tips ::); I may use truck chairs, as they are heaps easier to come by (Being an trucker does help in that part)
But I will still look around, maybe next time I have a delivery to Boeing here in Australia, i'll ask them.. you never know.
