Changing of the core system to 64 bit

I am about to upgrade my main sim computer an plan to run Win 7 64 bit.

Anyone have any experience with typical simpit peripherals or simpit software not working with a 64 bit Win7 OS?

Worried about the negative impacts of 64 bit.

best,

.................john

John,

I haven't heard anything about using windows 7 and simpit software compatibility. But I share your concern.
I think FS9 should work with MS OS be it 86 or 64. But I do think addons not licensed by Microsoft may not work and there are many of them. My thought is if FSUIPC is compatible with Win 7 64bit and if the peripherals can be run in the network we are good to go. Now the crucial thing is going to be the main aircraft that you usually fly? Does it work in 64bit environment?

Hi John,

does this mean that you'll be going the FSX route as well ?

This may be advantageous, as with FSUIPC4 you can now access Lvars. This makes interfacing with the 146 systems, a lot easier, using Lua Plug-Ins.

I too am considering the Windows 7 route, at least for my main FS PC, the networked PC's will remain XP.

I think that most 32 bit Apps will work (some may need to be run in XP compatibility mode). Do the Hagstroms work with an .exe or a .dll ? If it's an .exe, then that shouldn't present a problem, apart from the PS/2 USB problem you have already itterated in the other thread. Do the Hagstroms need to be programmed each time they are started, or do they hold their programming until re-programmed ? If it's the latter, then you could work-around by programming on a compatible PC, then connect to the new one.

Adrian,

Nope... no plans to go with FSX at the moment.... but the machine I will build (I am assured by people who know) will handle FSX pretty well.  It will be a "robust" machine :D

I do own the "Gold Edition" of FSX.... still in the shrink wrap.

The first issue with FSX is that, at the moment, I am running a HUGE investment in payware for fs2004.  The list is very long. When you add all of that stuff into fs2004 it (at least to my eye) surpasses FSX straight out of the box for visuals and "effects".  To get what I'd want out of FSX (which I realize COULD easily exceed what fs2004 could ever have) I'd have to start putting extra money in there.  I'm spending it all on the machine  ;).

The second issue is that the interfacing to the simpit is all based around fs2004.  I don't want to have to start re-doing all of that along with getting a new core machine up and running.  There will be many issues already.  Don't want any more right away.  And buying the new FSUIPC4 version for FSX is not in the budget either.  And so on and so on.

The Hagstrom cards only need re-programming when you want to change any key assignments.  So yes, I had already figured out the "work around" if the "PS2" adaptor on the ASUS P6X58D board that I will be using is one with the usb/PS2 gizmos that Hagstrom warned about.  ASUS does not have info available about exactly how that PS2 port is configured... already looked.

Yes, supposedly most 32 bit apps will work in Win 7 64-s compatibility mode...... but that won't be PROVEN until I try it  ::).  I do expect some bumps in the road.

Like you, my other cockpit instrument networked PCs will remain XP also.

Likely with time.... I will migrate to FSX.  At least I am not pressured by FSXI showing up anytime soon  :-X.

I'm getting excited about this.  I'll order all the parts today or early tomorrow from Newegg.  "Hey mister, can you spare a dime?"

Well....... gulp!......... the new system (in parts form) is ordered.  Easy come easy go  :-X.  Of course there will be "Some parental assembly required;D.

Core i7-960 Bloomfield 3.2 G LGA 1366 Quad core sitting on an ASUS P6X58D Premium mobo.  Bells and whistles to match.

Of course John, you could keep the old PC as part of the cockpit network, leave the Hagstroms connected to it and send the values across via WideFS.

John,

Finally it is "ON AIR" congrats! Did you get to test it? What are the specs? The best thing about upgrading processor, memory and graphic card is smoothness and the ability to do any setting change without a worry of stater or frame rate drop. Now the barrier is broken.
