My own simpit start

Postby Terrytuckins » Sun Apr 16, 2017 5:41 pm

Howdi all,

Thought I would introduce myself. I am unfortunately console bound and as such, am very limited to Warthunder. I know there are a lot who will snigger but as I've mentioned. I'm bound to a console. I started about a year ago and got the bug for immersion right away. I started looking at possibilities for a simpit and began trawling EBay for peripherals that were plug and play. I took a gamble on half these things working with the PlayStation but I'm glad to say so far so good  .

I built my Mk 1 rig

Round an old writing desk and that lasted a couple of months I decided it was taking up too much space and I threw together the Mk 2

fold away rig but found this to be too wobbly and lop sided

I wasn't happy with this at all and quickly moved on to the coffin lol.

Found this too narrow an then I got serious.
This is still a work In progress but I'm slowly getting there with the shell. The peripherals are due an upgrade an to make it feel more real, these will be butchered to my own design. I also can not wait for VR support which I'm confident will come in the near future. My 2d work around does for now though.

Welcome to Simviation, Terry.

Obviously you've put a good amount of time and money into your sim.

In your early attempts you have a keyboard mapped out for War Thunder, but later on you're using the PlayStation 4 VR headset.

Question - How do you find going from being able to see the necessary keys & buttons to not being able to use them without taking the VR headset off?

Me, I have tons of buttons, switches, and knobs. I like to start up from a cold, dark, cockpit. I switch on the Master switches and fuel pump, turn the Magneto switch, Avionics, the whole deal.

As much as I want to try VR flight simming, I'd hate to give up all those buttons & switches.

Thanks Airmail for reading and replying.
I have managed to keep expense to a minimum by purchasing through e bay and being strict with how much I've been willing to pay. I'm a big believer in "what's for you, will not go by you"and have managed to collect things for less than half the price of new.
I'm not far off the stage where I would like to concentrate on loading switches using the pcb from my keyboard and adding another for chat. I do have manual engine controls set to the CH 6 Axis throttle quadrant as well as trims, fuel mixture, prop pitch and water radiator, which I intend mounting out of site and connecting lawnmower cables to self made more realistic hand controls. I will also extend the wires from the toggle switches to momentary ones placed in various locations and figure out how to wire rotary switches for armaments ie bomb arming, cannon or guns arming. I am really interested to see just how far I can push it considering it's on a console. I have essentials for battling on the throttle of my Hotas like Zoom ( on a paddle axis, is variable instead of full or off), airbrakes, check 6, view recentre.

As far as the VR is conserned, my KB is mounted in such away as it's only a matter of sliding the viewer forward to see the keys. Much like cleaning your goggles  I'm quite surprised at how good it looks in the headset, especially since I fitted a Thor upscaler cable to the HMD. Much better colour and slightly better clarity of picture. I have ordered the T16000m package from Thrustmaster as it gives better accuracy before I start fixing the cables. It might take me quite a bit of time getting it just right.

The actual construction of the mockpit, so far has only cost £30 and that was paint and screws. The timber I gained along the way, this can be built with a jigsaw, a small drill, a pencil and some glue. I wanted to inspire someone else to start a project of there own really, no matter what your level of expertise, have a go at least.7

 Looking good! I've been researching building my own simpit. Keep it up. I don't do War Thunder, although I hear it's great. Been messing with World of Warplanes a bit. <<u
