John, A Question....

Postby stevehookem » Mon Dec 08, 2008 10:33 am

I thought this would be the best place to find you....

I am thinking about installing FS9 to run on the cockpit I'm getting for my son. After only using FSX, is this a good idea? He does have many add-ons for FSX including payware mega airports, PMDG and Level-D planes.

What benefit, if any, would I get from going to FS9? Is there a downside? I will be connecting his avionics computer to the main computer using a purchased copy of FSUIPC and WideFS. I am using Ellie Sytems avionics. Any problems there?

Are the graphics worse than FSX? There must be a reason why we have FSX now. However, it seems most of the cockpits run FS9. Why?

What are MUSTS for FS9?

Any other info would be appreciated.

Wow Steve....... I'd need to write a book to answer all of that fully!

hmm, so much to consider! My son does like the virtual cockpits..

My computer was built for FSX--as much as I could afford---and it does run FSX smoothly with most high settings. It should RIP through FS9 if I am understanding this correctly.

If we are mainly interested in commercial airliners, what should be the VERY FIRST installs we should do for FS9? Basically, if you were installing yours again for the first time, what exactly would you put on that you can't live without?

Steve,

FSGenesis terrain mesh including the lo-rez buffer mesh for the whole world.

Flight Environment (mainly for the clouds and water textures)

Ground Environment Pro

ActiveSky 6.5  (keep the Flight Environment clouds)

Every airport by FlyTampa

Other payware airports that offer AES (see below)

Aerosoft AES services  (best fs9 add on there is)

RealATIS

best,

...................john

PS:  Hum... if he REALLY likes the virtual cockpits.... will he really like flying out of a simpit?

Steve,

I only fly FS9, and have not bought FSX for a number of reasons really: I'd need to buy a new PC rig since what I've got (desktop and laptop) run FS9 well but likely wouldn't cope with FSX. Mainly though, it's because I almost exclusively fly what our mate Fozzer calls aluminium cigar tubes, and the reality is that whatever sim you fly, the ground textures and all the great low-level stuff just can't be seen at FL350. With all of the autogen turned on and with replacement trees etc etc, even low level can look pretty darn good, so I can do without flocks of birds, herds of wildebeest roaming the veldt etc etc.

Which reminds me: although there's a lot of payware out there that will do a lot for the sim, there's a huge amount of freeware that will do it for you too. The fun is looking! Nothing you can routinely see in my FS9 is original: I have replacement clouds, water, terrain textures; never fly the default planes. Make my own effects, gauges and flight dynamics. That's the fun of it really. John takes the realism to the next level (projector: wow, John! Way to go!) while with me it goes in a different direction, so that actually flying from one place to another only occupies a proportion of the time; the rest is developing, testing and generally fiddling about with what the sim can do, with a standard monitor and joystick.

I have very little payware: PMDG 738/9 and UKScenery London Gatwick is about it, really. So what freeware must you have? The 737 Experience 737-700 is a must (download it from here) if you want a great dynamic virtual cockpit. The plane's a couple of years old now but is still one of the best all-round out-of-the-box freeware planes out there. So good in fact that Project Opensky adapted the DVC (with permission) for use in a couple of their own 737NG models. Other planes: Project Opensky's 777-200 with another superb DVC, and then there's the Overland MD-11 - yes, also with DVC (http://www.overland.co.jp/japaneseairports/index.html). The latter one is freeware and downloadable from their site. For small planes, I fly the Cessna 150 Aerobat by a French development team (http://www.fs-tutorials.com/en/down_plane_C150_01.php), which is superb, and only flyable from the VC.

Added to the plethora of environmental texture addons out there, there's one thing that's essential for me: Soft Horizons by John Cillis, which magically transforms that annoying hard line at the FS9 horison into a misty, much more natural transition. Also, the freeware version of FSNavigator (in the utilities section) works as a great moving map and flight planner.

Great hobby, and so many things to keep yourself occupied with. Tonight's flight is in a CRJ700 from Heathrow to Stuttgart (a flight I did in real life this morning!)

Great info!

He doesn't fly anything but airliners. However, long hauls at FL350 don't happen much either. He likes to explore new airports, getting pushed from the gate, taxiing out taking off, flying around some and then landing again.

I know that when I watch him fly, the scenery is always a big part.

With the new simpit he is getting for Christmas, all the instruments will be on 2-17" monitors and he will have several hard button instruments as well. The outside view is 3-22" monitors using TripleHead2Go.

Can FS9 and FSX peacefully co-exist if I want to give it a go? I cannot mess up anything he has running now! It is flying very well but I'd like to see the difference.

John: I'm confused about exactly what FSGenesis to get. How do I get the best available scenery from them for the entire world? What would I need?

Steve,

I'm pretty sure that you can put any number of the different sims on your PC without any problems as they all exist in separate folders. I ran FS2002 and FS9 side-by-side for a while before I retired FS2002. Ask in the FSX forum if you want to be sure.

Your son's a lucky guy to be getting what he's getting - and lucky that his dad's got the bug too! My son's much more interested in fast car games and 'Dawn of War'-type stuff.  ::)

For taking off and landing again, the new Posky CRJ700 is very nice-looking: it's got an animated pushback truck that swivels when the plane turns; very cool. You might need to tweak the flight dynamics though, it's a little too fierce on takeoff, for one thing.

We love the CRJ's! His mom works for Air Canada Jazz. It's a favorite of ours.

My dad was a commercial pilot, I'm a pilot and my son loves it too. It's all in the family! The sim is far less money than avgas!

OK, we loaded FS9 and took it for a flight. I have everything turned up as high as possible. It doesn't look nearly as detailed as FSX to me. We are getting 85-100fps so I locked it down to 75fps. At JFK, for example, FS9 doesn't draw but two or three buildings in NYC. FSX looks like the city in the distance.

Also, I set the season for winter and it just looks dry to me. No real difference from season to season. I know this is the default scenery and we do have the U.S. texture add-on in FSX but FSX is clearly more detailed.

Flying the same plane at JFK in FSX at the same time, we have snow on the ground and a light snowfall. The city is rendered in the background. On takeoff, I am getting 35fps. In FS9, I was getting about 60fps. However, they both appear to be perfectly smooth.

I'm going to play with it some tomorrow on my own. My son got frustrated because the controls are different. When not using a yoke, he flies FSX with the mouse. Can you do that in FS9? We couldn't find it in the control lists.

Also, he gets moving gates in FSX. Can that happen in FS9 too?

Thoughts?

Steve,

You need to throttle back the framerates in fs9.

It does look better at 35fps. However, I think we will stick with FSX for now. I was just flying from Copenhagen to CDG and at FL340 in a PMDG747 I was getting 35-55FPS in FSX. And it looks really, really good.

Another note, I just ran Ellie System's avionics on the second computer for the first time too! WOW is all I can say. It is a very nice package of glass instruments. Even for a "non-PC" guy like myself, it was easy to set-up and get running. And I am networking a Vista 64 to a XP 64! I was running it on a 22" monitor. My son's sim will have 2-17" monitors. I can put the captain side and co-pilot side glass up with the standby instruments in the middle.

Question: I want one large overlay with cutouts for the instruments behind. Is there an easy way to do this? How do you get the positions right? I'm not an engineer--however I can measure. Maybe a tracing paper template is the way to go? Once I get that, is there a more affordable route than Front Panel Express (http://www.frontpanelexpress.com/) that would look as nice?

I guess what I am asking above is:

What size rectangle or square should the ND be?
What size rectangle or square should the EADI be?
What diameter should the standby gauges be?

I will have to allow for covering the frame on the monitors and I have a center "bar" separating the two. I want to put the EADI and ND on the left and the Standby and ND on the right monitor. When the EICAS gauges get released, I'll use the large cut out on the right and put it there, replacing the other ND.

Good that you're limiting the fps in FS9 - mine's set at 20, and here's what mine looks like. This is the CRJ out of La Guardia.

John,

Can you give me any info about panels and cutouts?

Thanks!
