P-39D Airacobra Repaint

Postby investdude » Sat Jul 23, 2016 7:07 pm

I have a repaint of the stock P-39D Airacobra in RAF markings of 601 Squadron from when they were briefly equipped with P-39s. The markings on each side of the fuselage are UF and AH601 and one side of the fuselage always shows the makings backward viz. 106HA and FU. There are 2 fuselage files in the Texture folder: p39d_airacobra_r.bmp and p39d_airacobra_t.bmp. I have discovered by trying to repaint the markings that the model file (I assume) is using only the t file for both side of the fuselage and ignoring the r file. Is there any way to access the model file and make this adjustment? I've been unable to find a program which will open .mdl files.

To the best of my knowledge, the only program that can directly open .mdl files is ModelConverterX. I've never been able to figure out if you can EDIT the .mdl files with it, so you may have to de-compile or disassemble the .mdl back into a GMax file or the equivalent with another program like SketchUp.

If you have TheB24Guy's OH P-39, then the _r is for the right side and the _t is for the left. His model has the de-mirrored textures and has the VC cockpit. It is a direct replacement for the stock P-39. Its actually made from the stock model so everything lines up.

If you can't find the model here then you can get it at SOH...

Allen Doweny has also made a few other versions of the P-39.

Thanks Polar_Lion, that worked. I had come to the conclusion that the only answer would be through a 3rd party aircraft but I hadn't been able to find one that worked. The B-24 Guy's OH P-38 does the trick. Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I wasn't around when this post was initiated, and it's good you had an alternate means, but I was frequently active with CFS (particularly CFS1 but CFS1 planes can be utilized in CFS2) , including my file edits. For texture referencing I open a plane's .mdl with a Hex Editor. Sometimes I performed a time-consuming search to find which parts of the plane were referenced to what texture; for instance, along with other texture editing, I like the ability to provide different prop hub coloring on different clones of acft, such as the stock Spitfire_MkIX* (I copy the original files into a differently-named folder and, preferably, rename the .air, .dp and, in the new miodel folder, the .mdl files accordingly; opening the new aircraft.cfg file, I change the sim= reference to the new folder/.air name; this may be a few more mb than adding additional [fltsim._] to the original acft folder's aircraft.cfg file but works better for me in CFS1 or CFS2)

* In the texture folder, make a new 256x265 texture (256-color; I haven't checked whether a 512-color texture will work in CFS2 with a CFS1 acft - but none of my current paint programs do a 512-color conversion) named spit_prophb.bmp; although only one portion of this new texture will be utilized, applying your preferred color to the entire texture will do fine. If using XVI32 HexEditor: to apply this spit_prophb.bmp to the propeller hub, find line 10680 in the Spitfire_MkIX_n.mdl (or its rename) and change the spit_r_side.bmp to spit_prophb.bmp.

CFS2 can use up to 1024x1024. Provided the model was made using a texture that size.
