My new water textures

Postby Balsa_Pilot » Sat Feb 01, 2014 1:35 pm

Just thought I'd show some shots of my new water that I've put so many hours into. I've uploaded the textures here on Simviation if you're interested. The file name is "Mel's Realistic Water for FS2004." Image Image Image

Excellent!.... :D ...!

Well done!

Its always nice to see some new "Water" and "Grass" textures for FS 2004!

(They are sometimes worth trying out in FSX, as well!).

I really do like FSX and I wish I could run it on high settings to see all of its glory, but when I set it much past medium and click fly now, my computer growls and whines, and all the lights in the house go dim, (exaggerating a little) and there is so much lag that it's hard to enjoy flying. However, with fs9 I can run all settings maxed out, with 80% AI traffic active, and there is little to no lag. The only thing that really bugged me was the water. I've tried just about everything out there (even payware water) and while it looked nice, I still wasn't satisfied. So I decided to try and make my own textures. They are far from flawless but I'm still improving on them. As they are at this point, I've compare them to actual photo's of the water around the Seattle area, and I thought they looked somewhat close, so I decided to upload them. I worry though that they may not look the same on other PC's. I'd really like to get some feed back.

Balsa... ;) ...!

You've got the "Water" sorted, very nicely!.... ....

Now how about some deep tufts of real-looking; "Grass", that our wheels can plough through, and get caught in the wheel-spats, on farm strips, etc... ;) ... ;) ...!

Re: My new water textures

Postby Balsa_Pilot » Wed Feb 05, 2014 10:16 am

I've tried some grass textures that I found here on Simviation and other places, and some looked pretty good up close, but at a distance it was way too sparkly looking. I haven't tried my hand at making any of my own. As for a grid look in the water, I think that comes in as flight simulator loads the "env" textures from day to dusk, and night to dawn and so forth. It still occurs with my textures as it does with all of the others from what I can tell. It will look "patchy" as it transitions from one env texture to the other, but it usually only lasts a minute or two. I'm not sure if there is way to work around that mess or not. I've made some absolutely breath taking sunset and sunrise textures, but they only look great when they are fully loaded. It's the in between load times that kill the looks of everything. That is why I opted to use the lesser quality dusk and dawn textures. They didn't seem to look as bad as they were being loaded. The color of the water is from actual photos, and all of my water textures are the same color to try to eliminate some of the patchy look. Image
Flight simulator has a really strange way of loading textures.
